Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Second-quarter 2026 sales rose 5.7% to $47.861 billion, with 1.7% comparable growth.
  • Tariff refunds delivered $730 million in Q2 and mostly offset input-cost pressure.
  • Digital sales grew 11%, and 90% of stores sold at least one SRS deal.

What critics are saying

  • CFO Richard McPhail still calls housing frozen, suppressing big-ticket remodel demand into 2026.
  • Boycotts over diversity policy changes and ICE allegations damaged the brand in 2025.
  • If SRS and GMS integration misses cross-sell targets, 2026 margin pressure lasts through 2028.

What makes The Home Depot unique

  • SRS and GMS give Home Depot specialty-trade reach across roofing, wallboard, and ceilings.
  • Magic Apron spans stores, web, and phones, using local inventory in real time.
  • Pro customers generate roughly half of sales, anchoring larger, repeat renovation projects.

Major US retailers pocket $5B in tariff refunds as Walmart gets $2.9B, Target $994M, but shoppers see little benefit

Major US retailers have received over $5 billion in tariff refunds this week alone, with Walmart getting $2.9 billion, Target $994 million, and Home Depot $730 million. The Trump administration is refunding approximately $166 billion in tariff revenue after the Supreme Court struck down its sweeping tariff policy, having returned $100 billion so far. Despite studies showing consumers bore the brunt of initial tariff costs through higher prices, most companies are reinvesting the refunds rather than passing savings to shoppers. Retail executives indicated in earnings calls they plan to put the money back into their businesses. Consumers have filed class-action lawsuits against companies receiving refunds, but none have concluded. Americans have limited recourse to recover funds if companies don't voluntarily lower prices.

Home Depot's Temco Logistics lays off 223 workers across three US states

Home Express Delivery Service, operating as Temco Logistics, is laying off 71 workers in Dallas as it closes its flatbed delivery centre in the Mountain Creek neighbourhood. The facility at 9222 W. Jefferson Blvd. will shut down, with affected employees being separated from employment beginning 26 September. Temco Logistics, a delivery and logistics company providing last-mile and white-glove delivery services for appliances and furniture, was acquired by The Home Depot in 2023. The company has filed similar notices in Florida and Georgia, where it is also closing flatbed delivery centres, resulting in a total of 223 job losses across three states.

Home Depot and Lowe's revenue trends reveal market dominance and valuation shifts

Home Depot and Lowe's, the two major US home improvement retailers, continue to show divergent revenue scales. Home Depot reported $41.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended May 2026, whilst Lowe's recorded $23.1 billion for the same period. Home Depot maintains its dominant position, benefiting from its professional contractor customer base, which contributes approximately half its sales. The company reported a 12% EBIT margin for its latest quarter and announced a strategic partnership with Hertz to benefit military personnel. Lowe's recorded a 33% gross margin for its quarter ended May 2026, though the company completed a permanent workforce reduction at its North Carolina facilities in early 2026. Both retailers faced share price pressure from interest rate headwinds and a soft housing market, with Home Depot shares dropping to $289.10 and Lowe's to $203.40 during the period.

Morgan Stanley has maintained its overweight rating and $420 price target on Home Depot following the company's first-quarter fiscal 2026 results, calling it "a turnkey stock without the turn". The firm views the stock's current discount as an opportunity, despite Home Depot trading down 9.14% year to date. Home Depot reported net sales of $41.8 billion, up 4.8% year over year, with comparable US sales up 0.4%. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $3.43, versus $3.56 in the prior year.
