- Must have a current state license to practice as a licensed practical nurse (LPN).
- Must have current CPR certification.
- Demonstrates knowledge of basic nursing practice with an interest in gerontological nursing.
- Must have patience, compassion, and a desire to care for elderly residents in a gentle and empathetic manner.
- Coordinate the nursing care of residents on the unit and ensure that all residents are assigned a capable nurse aide.
- Use independent judgment and discretion in performing the duties of the position.
- Provide safe and accurate medication-related interventions to residents.
- Administer and document medications and treatments according to each resident’s medication schedule using current medication-pass standards.
- Understand the rationale for the effects of medications and treatments and administer them correctly.
- Provide physician-ordered treatments, including wound care, urinary catheterization, oxygen care, and tracheostomy care.
- Order and receive medications from the pharmacy.
- Account for narcotics and sign for medication counts and exchanges of keys to medication carts and medication rooms.
- Respond promptly to resident requests for pain intervention and document the intervention in the resident record.
- Accurately transcribe physician orders and coordinate their implementation.
- Perform nursing assessments regarding residents’ health status.
- Notify the physician of changes in resident status and promptly implement and document new orders.
- Prepare work assignment sheets based on resident safety and the education, preparation, experience, knowledge, and abilities of assigned personnel.
- Report staff shortages to nursing management.
- Participate in and communicate employee actions that may result in reward or discipline.
- Additional certification in a nursing specialty.
- Two years of experience in a long-term care setting.
- Basic computer skills and experience with electronic medical records.
