Requirements
- A Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school of Nursing is required.
- Five years of clinical nursing experience are required; combined education and experience may substitute for the minimum experience.
- If the candidate has less than two years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, Schedule II controlled substances may not be prescribed without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
- The candidate must be able to speak, read, and write English proficiently.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and the ability to understand, follow, and successfully perform the duties are required.
- A Registered Nurse license is required.
- A Nurse Practitioner license is required.
- A current Nurse Practitioner Furnisher license to furnish medications in California is required.
- An unrestricted DEA certificate for Schedule II-V controlled substances is required.
- National board certification in the Nurse Practitioner area of specialty, accredited by ABSNC or NCCA, is required.
- For hospital or acute care settings, ANCC or AACN certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is required upon hire, subject to the stated grandfathering exception.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required for hospital, acute care, and ambulatory infusion center settings.
- Fire Life Safety Training certification is required within Los Angeles City settings, with the stated 30-day obtainment requirement if no card is held at hire.
- For Las Vegas positions, one of the following Nurse Practitioner specialized certifications is required: Acute Care, Adult Medicine, Family Medicine, or Gerontology.
- For Las Vegas positions, an unrestricted DEA certificate with a Nevada address is required.
- For Las Vegas positions, a valid Nevada Board of Pharmacy certificate is required.
- For Las Vegas positions, a valid Nevada State Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license is required.
- For Las Vegas positions, USC credentialing must be obtained from the governing board within six months of hire.
- For Las Vegas positions, Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth patient and family interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patients' interpretations of their health needs.
- Identify and treat patients' diseases and manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
- Perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret the completed results.
- Develop and implement long- and short-range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures including obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of conditions caused by trauma or infection.
- Write orders to increase, decrease, or change medications, subject to physician checking and counter-signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Maintain pertinent patient progress records, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of changes in patient conditions.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical and psychological problems, and prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health.
- Assist with medical research projects in accordance with medical research protocols and obtain Institutional Review Board approval for treatment protocols.
- Research community resources for patient referrals and refer patients to the most appropriate resource based on patients' medical needs and conditions.
- Maintain compliance with University and department policies and procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection-control requirements, as well as accreditation and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in in-service education programs and professional associations.
- Manage the clinical aspects of the clinic, patient rounding and care, nursing performance improvement, job performance and competency evaluations, staffing, and scheduling.
- Work with directors, employees, and preceptors in orienting and training new employees.
- Provide direct and indirect patient care, support systems, research, education, and professional leadership.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members, including physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advanced practice providers, while retaining responsibility for ongoing clinical management of patients.
- Communicate, plan, and implement care directly with other healthcare professionals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
