Requirements
  • Twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required registered nurse credential.
  • Texas registered nurse licensure, with permanent Texas licensure required within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • Basic Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association within four months.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform the essential functions of the job, particularly activities affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment when interacting with physicians, the interprofessional care team, patients, and families.
  • Critical-thinking and clinical-judgment skills sufficient to work autonomously under the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient time-management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, including patients with varied and complex needs.
  • Conduct nursing assessments and assist with examinations and treatment while maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to coordinate compassionate, efficient, high-quality care and desired treatment outcomes.
  • Use technology, administer medications, perform procedures, and manage emergencies while advocating for patient and family rights.
  • Participate in or lead unit and shared-governance initiatives and contribute to service-line or hospital-wide initiatives with management.
  • Use therapeutic communication, active listening, and teaching to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team and collaborate on plans of care.
  • Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes, and coach and mentor staff and students, including through preceptorship when applicable.
  • Follow patient- and family-centered care standards and culturally diverse and inclusive professional nursing practices.
  • Develop, update, and communicate plans of care, including discharge plans, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Prioritize care according to patient needs, abilities, and preferences, and advocate to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Provide patient teaching, evaluate comprehension, and adapt teaching methods as needed.
  • Follow nursing-process, regulatory, and professional-practice standards.
  • Identify practice-improvement opportunities using research-based evidence to achieve core-measure and patient-safety outcomes.
  • Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care based on evaluation of patient condition.
  • Improve quality and safety through reporting near misses and collaborating with the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Manage time, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
  • Provide input on unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.
  • Contribute to department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency.
  • Identify and present innovation, efficiency, and patient-care or unit-operation improvements using evidence-based practice literature.
  • Offer innovative solutions through evidence-based practice, performance-improvement projects, and shared-governance activities.
  • Champion new care pathways or service-line implementations and support related initiatives.
  • Research practice changes and present options to shared governance and leadership.
  • Remain available for on-call requirements during emergencies.
  • Travel within the Houston metropolitan area when required.
Desired Qualifications

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Crisis Prevention Institute certification or instructor certification.
