Requirements
  • Completion of high school or an equivalency diploma and one year of experience in laboring work, professional landscape work, or park maintenance, including use of hand and power tools, trucks, trailers, mowers, tractors, equipment maintenance, repair, and construction work; an equivalent combination of training and experience is acceptable.
  • A valid driver's license is required, with a valid Florida driver's license required within 60 days of appointment.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions, including work with herbicides and around smoke and extreme heat during prescribed burns.
  • Ability to work safely with tools and mechanized equipment and around the public.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed and complex work schedules and diagrams.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • A pre-employment physical examination is required.
  • Work requires sufficient physical strength and agility to safely perform all essential functions.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain S-190/S-130, I-100, and prescribed-fire Survival standards certifications.
  • May be required to obtain State of Florida Department of Corrections Inmate Training certification within six months.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine trail, grounds, and landscaping work, including pruning or trimming vegetation, pulling weeds, mowing, applying herbicide and fertilizer, raking or blowing leaves, edging curbs, loading trimmings, picking up trash, and clearing parking lots and sidewalks.
  • Install city trees, shrubs, and bedding plants by preparing planting sites, digging holes, setting and watering plants, and preparing support structures.
  • Operate motorized equipment including mowers, tractors, frontend loaders, backhoes, trucks, dump trucks, trailers, and other equipment used to maintain parks, grounds, and athletic fields.
  • Service and wash vehicles.
  • Inspect assigned equipment and perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including adjustments, lubrication, fluid and filter changes, component replacement, and lighting maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform athletic field maintenance, including chalking, dragging, watering infields and warning tracks, packing holes, laying out fields, painting lines and bases, removing trash, and removing practice equipment.
  • Assist with maintenance, assembly, and repair of recreation equipment.
  • Assist with or perform basic electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, concrete, and other trade work using power hand tools such as drills, nailing guns, and circular saws.
  • Perform hand and bench work in a carpentry shop, including welding and metal repairs.
  • Provide information and assistance to citizens visiting City parks or conservation areas.
  • Support City special events and programs by updating, repairing, and caring for displays and exhibits; moving and lifting equipment, tables, and chairs; setting up barricades and temporary traffic-control devices; providing flagging services; and cleaning up after events.
  • Assist with moving and storing office equipment and cleaning and maintaining buildings and facilities.
  • Secure park facilities after normal hours, respond to emergencies and disasters, and enforce building rules and regulations.
  • Participate as a member of a trained prescribed-burn team and an exotic-pest-plant-control team.
  • Prepare and/or enter work orders.
  • Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Drive or operate light-to-medium equipment or trucks in the absence of regular operators or truck drivers.
  • Act in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Direct the work of contractors or volunteers.
  • Chauffeur other employees depending on assignment and work location.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
