Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree as a Physician Assistant is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine, for the physician assistant pathway.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • The role requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The role involves working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for neurology patients and their families in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete acute assessments, pre-procedure evaluations, surgical evaluations, and ongoing follow-up in the ambulatory setting.
  • Complete integrated and comprehensive evaluations and treatment or surgical plans.
  • Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with neurology faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols, as appropriate to scope of practice.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results under established clinical guidelines and within scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Coordinate appropriate services and tests before admission and for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Develop individualized plans of care for neurology patients, including teaching, disposition planning, follow-up, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum permitted by the practitioner’s education and certification.
  • Identify unstable or complex neurology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions in the clinic or hospital.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate neurology patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting; provide acute and ongoing ambulatory neurology care.
  • Assist with collecting outcome measures.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage the individual needs of patients and families.
  • Use equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
  • Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Update the professional knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Complete all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for neurology patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely for every patient visit in the medical record, following approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve outcome-based improvements in patient care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in neurology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to neurology patients and families during inpatient hospitalization and in the ambulatory setting.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret neurology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist neurology faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Neurology or acute care experience is preferred.
  • A master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
