Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of the hire date.
  • The role requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.
  • The role requires effective communication with staff and patients.
  • The role requires the ability to adapt to changing environments.
  • The role involves working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, the deceased, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform nonprofessional direct and indirect patient care activities, including meeting patients’ personal, physical, and comfort needs, under the supervision of a registered professional nurse.
  • Provide high-quality patient care in coordination with licensed medical staff.
  • Observe and immediately report all patient concerns and changes in condition to a registered nurse.
  • Assist the registered nurse with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care duties.
  • Record vital signs and oral intake and output, and assist with personal hygiene and other patient comfort measures.
  • Assist with specimen collection and other activities for assigned patients.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicate with the registered nurse regarding nutrition issues, including poor appetite or a stated lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assist the department with administrative tasks that support department operations.
  • Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements through computer-based learning, trainings, in-services, and competency validation.
