Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Eighteen years of age and a citizen of the United States.
  • Must attach High School Diploma/GED and Driver's License/State Identification Card before submitting the application.
  • Consent to a criminal background check.
  • Must achieve Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification as a Corrections Officer within twelve months of appointment.
  • Driving record must meet standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier for any employee who drives a vehicle on official business.
  • The Required Test is The Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam (LECSE).
  • Must be willing to participate in the Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam scheduling as communicated (Exams conducted every Wednesday and Friday at 8:30am).
Responsibilities
  • Attend Training Academy to become a Certified Jailer.
  • Under close supervision, perform Corrections Officer duties including booking, classifying, observing, transferring, transporting and releasing inmates with attention to health, safety and security.
  • Conduct inspections, shakedowns, inmate searches and make key checks.
  • Conduct head counts of inmates.
  • Complete, check and process official papers and documents.
  • Intervene and resolve crisis situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies.
  • Restrain combative inmates.
  • Serve or supervise the serving of meals to inmates.
  • Supervise inmates during cleaning duties.
  • Provide informal counseling to inmates.
  • Conduct safety inspections and inspections of fire exits.
  • Assist with the personal needs of inmates (telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits and commissary).
  • Be involved in direct supervision of activities of from one to 58 inmates at a time.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws.
  • Be able to perform duties with reasonable accommodations for disabilities as needed.
  • Be able to meet established physical standards.
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials, inmates and the public.
