Cummins cashes in on AI boom as hyperscalers set to spend $750B on data centres

Cummins is capitalising on the AI boom by supplying backup power generators to data centres. S&P Global estimates that major tech companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Oracle will collectively spend approximately $750 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, with much of it driven by AI infrastructure. During the second quarter, Cummins' Power Systems sales jumped 19% year over year, driven by strong global demand for data centre power equipment. The company is benefiting from increasing power requirements, as next-generation AI racks could reach 600 kilowatts or more, compared to traditional racks averaging around 12 kilowatts. Cummins is also expanding beyond backup power, recently announcing an agreement to provide natural gas generators for primary power at a high-performance-computing data centre in West Texas.

Building a sustainable future: construction's shift to alternative fuels and hydrogen Innovations.

Building a sustainable future: construction's shift to alternative fuels and hydrogen Innovations. Key points. * The construction industry is exploring alternative fuels to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. * Innovations in electric equipment are enhancing operational efficiency and lowering costs. * Cummins' HELM engine allows fuel flexibility, supporting hydrogen and other alternative fuels. * Manufacturers are developing technologies to ease the transition to battery-electric systems. The CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 event highlighted significant advancements in integrating alternative fuels within the construction industry, which has historically leaned on diesel as the primary energy source. With a growing urgency to adopt sustainable practices, construction firms are now exploring options like battery-electric, renewable diesel, natural gas, and hydrogen to reduce their carbon emissions. Dana Wuesthoff, Show Director for the event, emphasized the industry's need for practical solutions to lower their carbon footprint while maintaining project efficiency and budget adherence. Electric power is emerging as a leading alternative, especially for smaller construction machinery such as skid steers and compact wheel loaders. The benefits of electric equipment include zero emissions, reduced noise pollution, and decreased operating costs. However, challenges such as battery reliability, inadequate charging infrastructure, and higher purchase costs remain hurdles for widespread adoption. Innovations like Moog Construction's Adaptive Electrification Management System are addressing these challenges by streamlining the electrification process, providing significant cost savings and reducing parts count. Battery power is also being leveraged in support equipment, with VMAC showcasing a battery-electric air compressor ideal for service trucks in urban settings. Additionally, companies like Hitek Equipment are innovating by creating electric-heated components for equipment, providing more energy independence without fully electrifying machinery. In response to the emerging trend of fuel alternatives, Cummins introduced their next-gen X15 off-highway engine, which supports a range of fuel types, including hydrogen. This adaptability allows construction equipment owners to transition to alternative fuels gradually while still utilizing their existing engine systems. Mariana Pivetta from Cummins highlighted the benefits of flexibility in fuel choice, which can lead to greater operational efficiency and reduced costs. Overall, the construction sector is at a pivotal moment, seeking ways to incorporate alternative fuels like hydrogen while balancing their operational demands. As manufacturers continue to innovate, the path to a low-carbon, sustainable future in construction looks increasingly promising, paving the way for greater acceptance of alternative energy sources without sacrificing productivity.
