Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, or CMA, CCMA, or RMA certification, is required; alternatively, the candidate must meet eligibility requirements to take the CMA or RMA examination and obtain certification within six months of hire.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire or transfer and must be valid and in good standing in Michigan.
  • Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration is required.
  • The position requires problem-solving and prioritization skills, clear communication with patients, physicians, and staff, patient confidentiality, independent work, teamwork, computer skills, and the ability to input and retrieve data from computerized systems.
  • The employee must be able to stand or walk considerably, lift light objects up to 20 pounds, assist with lifting and moving patients, and sustain attention during computer-based and repetitive detailed work.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations by performing assessments, obtaining histories and vital signs, reconciling medications, conducting routine hearing, vision, and other testing, and documenting pertinent information in the chart.
  • Maintain documentation standards and review charts before appointments to ensure required requests and documents are in place.
  • Administer physician-requested treatments, obtain specimens for urine testing and phlebotomy, and perform laboratory tests as directed.
  • Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and Pap or pelvic examinations.
  • Schedule outside patient tests and procedures, including X-ray and MRI, and provide patients with appropriate preparation instructions.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals and call in prescriptions.
  • Stock examination rooms, conduct daily supply inventories, and report items needing reorder.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling in the electronic medical record system.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, appointment necessity, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
  • Assist with completing patient forms, including workers’ compensation and disability forms.
  • Attend required staff, educational, and other meetings.
  • Travel to multiple assigned locations, sometimes with short notice, and learn provider workflows, preferences, practice procedures, and required competencies.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.

  • Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
