McDonald's supersizes its ads, Walmart lights up & DoorDash widens its mall base | Fast Five.

McDonald's supersizes its ads, Walmart lights up & DoorDash widens its mall base | Fast Five. October 7, 2026 Hello Omni Talk Fans! This week, I handed the Fast Five guest hosting chair over to Richard McKenzie for the very first time, and apparently Richard took his preparation very seriously. As in, he trained AI to talk like me and spent the week getting challenged by "Claude Chris." So, yes, Omni Talk were off to a strong start. Richard, former Ocado executive and Veloq CEO, joined me from Richmond, home of Ted Lasso, to talk through five retail stories that gave Omni Talk plenty to debate. And somewhere between Chariots of Fire, Roy Kent, French retail, and one truly unbelievable IKEA furniture assembly story, Richard officially brought this week's show to an 11. Here's what Richard and I covered, sponsored by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Mirakl, Ocampo Capital, Quorso, Veloq, and new Fast Five sponsor SmartScout: McDonald's supersizes its ads. McDonald's is piloting third-party advertising on digital drive-thru menu boards at 450 company-owned U.S. restaurants as part of its new McDonald's Media Network, an opportunity the company reportedly hopes could eventually grow into a $1 billion advertising business. (Source) Richard and I both understand the appeal, but just because you can put an ad in front of someone doesn't necessarily mean you should. For me, the more interesting opportunity may ultimately be inside the McDonald's app, where the company knows more about the customer and has a better chance of delivering something relevant without making the drive-thru experience feel like one more place consumers have to see an ad. Sephora meets M&S. Marks & Spencer and Sephora are teaming up to bring Sephora at M&S shop-in-shops to 100 M&S stores and M&S.com beginning in spring 2027. It's a familiar playbook for those of Omni Talk in the U.S., but Richard and I think this particular partnership has the potential to be especially interesting. (Source) M&S brings a loyal customer base and strong physical footprint, while Sephora brings the brands and beauty credibility. Richard's point was that Sephora needs critical mass in the UK, and 100 M&S locations gives it that very quickly. To me, this has the makings of one of those rare retail partnerships where 1 + 1 really could equal 3. DoorDash builds A bigger mall in your pocket. DoorDash is expanding its retail Marketplace with Macy's, Anthropologie, The North Face, Vans, and Timberland, while also launching Dasher Returns, a $7.99 service that lets customers have eligible returns picked up right from their doorstep. DoorDash calls the growing assortment a "mall in your pocket," while Richard described it, at least for now, as more of an "emergency mall in your pocket." (Source) I think the longer-term opportunity is much bigger. DoorDash has already built the customer relationship, logistics network, and consumer habit around opening one app and getting something quickly. Now it is steadily adding more retailers and categories to that ecosystem. That's why I keep coming back to DoorDash as a sleeping giant in retail. And, as I told Richard, if I'm Amazon, I'm scared as hell about that possibility. Walmart lights up. Walmart is rolling out three new digital shelf label capabilities companywide by the holiday season: Shop to Light, Pick to Light, and Stock to Light. All three use Walmart's digital shelf labels to flash lights that help customers or associates locate products more quickly. (Source) Richard ranked Stock to Light first, Pick to Light second, and Shop to Light third, and I can see the logic. But I also think Shop to Light gets more interesting when you start thinking about how it could eventually connect to Walmart's app, personalization, and retail media capabilities. Or, at minimum, it gives parents a new way to entertain their kids in Walmart: "Find the light, Timmy." IKEA goes small, then smaller. IKEA is closing three of its small-format plan and order stores in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, including its Georgetown location less than a year after opening. And Richard was very happy he wasn't the person responsible for figuring this one out. (Source) The bigger question for both of Omni Talk was whether small-format IKEA fundamentally works against what makes IKEA special. IKEA is a destination where you walk the showroom, experience the products, grab what you need, and hopefully solve a whole bunch of home furnishing needs in one trip. So while IKEA should absolutely keep experimenting, Omni Talk both struggled with the same question: Is small-format IKEA solving a real customer problem, or taking away the very thing customers go to IKEA for? Be careful out there, Chris and the OmniTalk team P.S. Be sure to check out all its other podcasts from the past week here, too.

Walmart's free streaming service now has over 400 live channels & 45,000 movies & is expanding with new creator.

Walmart's free streaming service now has over 400 live channels & 45,000 movies & is expanding with new creator. October 7, 2026 VIZIO, the television brand owned by Walmart, announced a series of expansions to its free streaming service WatchFree+ today during Advertising Week in New York. The additions include broader licensing deals with major studios, more than 40 channels built around online creators, an original holiday series, and a feature-length original film set to premiere later this year. The company said WatchFree+ now carries more than 45,000 movies and shows along with more than 400 live and local channels. New and expanded arrangements with MGM, NBCUniversal, Disney, A&E, and A24 are expected to add further titles this fall, among them The Good Doctor, Chicago Fire, Law & Order, Property Brothers, and Little House on the Prairie. The service is available on VIZIO televisions and through a web player. Separately, WatchFree+ will exclusively premiere the original film Jingle Bells Wedding Bells this holiday season. The movie stars Rachel Bilson and Scott Foley and was produced by ITV America Nashville and Happy Accidents. GEICO is serving as presenting sponsor. Company representatives indicated that the film is tied to a broader content-and-commerce arrangement involving Omnicom and Walmart Connect, details of which were scheduled for discussion at VIZIO's Advertising Week breakfast event. The platform is also adding more than 40 free, ad-supported channels organized around individual creators and digital brands. The lineup spans comedy, food, gaming, family, lifestyle, sports, and travel programming and includes channels associated with MrBeast, Celine Dept, Hot Ones, The Royalty Family, Ben Azelart, Ryan Trahan, Nick DiGiovanni, Preston Playz, Rebecca Zamolo, Sam and Colby, and Uncle Roger. In addition, WatchFree+ will carry Holiday Chocolate Workshop, an original series built around chocolatier Amaury Guichon. The series follows Guichon and a team of chocolatiers as they prepare large-scale holiday pieces, culminating in a season-ending presentation. It is positioned as exclusive to the service and is described as combining creator-produced segments with opportunities for brand integration across streaming and social platforms. VIZIO linked the programming moves to recent usage figures for its operating system. The company reported that VIZIO OS was the top-selling smart TV operating system in the United States during the first half of 2026 and that it reached 32 million yearly active devices, an increase of 20 percent from the prior year. Viewing hours on WatchFree+ rose 58 percent year over year in the same period, according to internal company data covering the second quarter of fiscal 2027. The announcements were made in connection with the seventh annual VIZIO Advertising Week Breakfast Showcase. That event forms part of Walmart's broader presence at the conference, which also included Partner Connect, an annual presentation of advertising products from Walmart Connect. Attendees were told the new programming and channel additions would be highlighted as examples of how brands are placing advertising alongside free streaming content on the platform. Man raises racial profiling concerns after he alleges differential treatment over cuticle clippers at Walmart: 'I see what's going on'

Man raises racial profiling concerns after he alleges differential treatment over cuticle clippers at Walmart: 'I see what's going on' Fair point. Mikewillcutsmp is accusing a Walmart employee of treating him differently while he shopped. In a TikTok video he captioned "Store Policy...or Racial Profiling," Mike said he went to an outlet of the retail chain and looked for cuticle clippers in the beauty department. He noted that the items were locked and that a woman was already waiting in the section for her item to be unlocked. When an employee eventually arrived, the woman allegedly left with her item, but Mike claims that when it was his turn to retrieve his, the employee told him she needed to put it in a box. Mike sensed something was wrong and immediately confronted the employee. "I said, 'Well, why didn't the lady have to put her stuff in a box? The one that you just held, the one that just grabbed the items before I did and walked away,'" Mike recalled telling her. He said the employee tried to justify her actions by claiming that the products were different, but he kept emphasizing what he observed. He allegedly told her, "We grabbed from the same little, you know, door, like we were standing next to each other. Why do I have to put my item in a security box? She got to walk away with hers." The employee apparently apologized, but Mike wanted to escalate the matter to a senior. "I see what's going on. I'm gonna go tell your manager," Mike recounted. The footage then shows him approaching a man and requesting to speak with the employee's supervisor, who turns out to be the manager. In the video, Mike recounts his experience to the manager, who then asks him to describe her appearance. When Mike identified her as a "short" Filipino woman, the manager confirmed he knew whom Mike referred to and apologized for the employee's behavior. Mike ended his video by thanking the manager for helping him in this situation. He said, "Got a brother as a manager and he know...I wasn't wrong about what I felt." "Good job for sticking up for yourself" Some people in the comments appreciated Mike for standing up for himself. One person wrote, "Good job for sticking up for yourself." Another said, "I'm so glad you reported it to the manager." A few people questioned Mike's decision to still buy the items despite what happened. One person commented, "Stop shopping at Walmart you find those cutter at Tj max." Another remarked, "And you still made the purchase at Walmart..." A handful of people shared their experiences with Walmart. One person said, "They tried me while wearing a $2k YSL bag and paying with an Amex Platinum. It's not about your ability to pay, it's about their ability to degrade you. I NEVER went back and never will." Another spoke about having an experience mildly similar to Mike's. The wrote, "I just left Walmart because everything I needed was locked up. My usual Walmart don't have anything locked up. Just grab and go. Should've went there instead." Walmart and Target have recently faced criticism, mainly fuelled by online rhetoric stemming from numerous complaints. This has led to calls for a boycott. Although social media discussions show some people are boycotting, many still shop there because these stores are undeniably convenient and resourceful, especially when you need something quickly.
