Requirements
  • Must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor or CPR/First Aid Instructor or Basic Life Support Instructor Certification
  • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • Completion of Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Criminal and FBI background checks (obtained prior to first shift)
  • Safety Education Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours (International Students 20 hours) per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks
  • Work will take place at the White Building, McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor) and Intramural Building
  • Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that will include mornings, evenings, weekends; some holiday hours are required
Responsibilities
  • Instruct American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED and First Aid Courses and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses to a variety of ages, experiences, learning styles and abilities of participants and meet the outlined objectives
  • Demonstrate confidence and the ability to use course materials effectively, classroom management and know how to use the material effectively
  • Ensure that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe
  • Complete needed paperwork and assist in the lifeguard pre-employment screenings and in-services
  • Respectfully manage disagreements and model positive rapport with participants (including in online communities)
  • Arrive on time for all assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage
  • Remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with supervisory team
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations, use independent judgment and have a strong sense of integrity
  • Attend and participate in all trainings and meetings within employee group and department wide
  • Be receptive to professional and personal development, give and receive feedback, balance time commitments, recognize limitations and work to improve and function as a contributing member of the Penn State Campus Recreation team
  • Must obtain and maintain professional certifications and complete required training as listed above
  • Some work will be performed at Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training and background checks (already covered above)
