Responsibilities
  • Perform operating-room scheduling duties according to established procedures, including accurately scheduling cases, checking for conflicts, confirming tentative cases, scheduling related departmental services, notifying Anesthesia and Sterile Processing, preparing the next-day computerized operating-room schedule, printing preference lists and pick tickets, and setting up or releasing scheduling blocks.
  • Perform data entry for operating-room and Anesthesia patient charges and complete patient records in the Cerner system by 10 a.m. for the previous day.
  • Answer and operate multi-line telephone systems, paging systems, interdepartmental intercom systems, and hospital computer terminals.
  • Process and route telephone messages and information for physicians, residents, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, patients, and hospital departments.
  • Interact professionally with hospital personnel, physicians' offices, patients, visitors, families, and other healthcare team members.
  • Assemble, imprint, check, balance, and maintain operating-room, Anesthesia, patient-charge, pre-anesthesia, and other unit records.
  • Run operating-room schedules, physician and staff scheduling reports, patient-billing reports, and other reports supporting system and department accuracy.
  • Perform non-clinical patient-support tasks, including sending for patients, processing transfers or admissions, watching patients at the front desk, and retrieving or delivering X-rays and specimens.
  • Maintain office supplies, operating-room forms, equipment, and related requisitions according to established procedures and cost-containment objectives.
  • Notify appropriate operating-room, admission, Anesthesia, holding, and recovery-room staff of added and canceled cases.
  • Assist with training new secretary trainees and cross-train or rotate assignments among the front desk, billing, scheduling, and floater functions.
  • Work Saturday and Sunday shifts, holidays, and other weekend coverage as needed.
  • Attend required unit meetings and mandatory in-services and comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an orderly work area and complete assigned tasks accurately and on time.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with the billing process or billing systems is desired.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
