Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition/Dietetics

Responsibilities
  • Providing all types of nutritional care/interventions as part of a managed care team, including screens, assessments and follow ups, for patients with various needs and maintaining documentation in the medical record.
  • Teaching and educating patients and family on diets such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, renal disease, liver/kidney transplant, weight loss, stem cell transplant, stroke, cardiac health, healthy diet during pregnancy and lactation; providing nutrition support education for all new feeding tube placements (PEG, J-tube, DHT).
  • Acting as a resource to other health care providers by participating in multidisciplinary daily rounds (SICU, MICU, liver kidney transplant, stem cell transplant, NICU, etc.) and attending daily multidisciplinary discharge planning meetings.
  • Having an advanced level of knowledge in malnutrition with the ability to perform hands on Nutrition focused physical assessments to diagnose patients with malnutrition (and vitamin/mineral deficiencies based on physical presentation).
  • Having ordering writing privileges; responsibilities include ordering/managing Enteral Nutrition while in the hospital, for discharge, and at home; ordering/managing Parenteral Nutrition while in the hospital, managing home Total Parenteral Nutrition, ordering pertinent labs (renal chem 10, triglycerides, albumin, prealbumin), and ordering electrolyte replacements as needed; ordering protein modulars, prebiotics, oral diets, oral supplements, pancreatic enzymes and vitamin/minerals for cystic fibrosis, and managing vitamin/minerals in the neonate.
  • Serving as a preceptor to dietetic students and acting as a nutritional resource to staff by completing in services and being available by phone/pager; involvement in multidisciplinary research projects and grants; establishing nutritional protocols for ongoing research and grant funding.
  • Conducting monthly continuous quality improvement by performing peer reviewed chart audits; completing individual bi-weekly and monthly productivity reports; conducting continuous quality improvement within specialty teams; making presentations outside the hospital as required.
