Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience is required.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to underwrite employer stop loss at the case and portfolio levels is required.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, state and federal filing regulations, and guidelines is required.
  • Diverse and deep insurance and reinsurance experience across multiple products and operational functions is required.
  • A strong grasp of underwriting reporting and financial concepts, as well as accounting principles such as International Financial Reporting Standards and statutory reporting, is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting successfully with internal and external clients are required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills are required.

Responsibilities
  • Implement strategy to drive profitability, retention, and written premium goals of the Medical Business Unit.
  • Evaluate portfolio performance based on profitability metrics and oversee continuous portfolio improvement in alignment with division or segment objectives.
  • Demonstrate proper use of underwriting tools and recommend improvements.
  • Perform underwriting referral reviews and make independent decisions according to underwriting guidelines and within the underwriting letter of authority while maintaining client correspondence and agreement documentation.
  • Advise on and maintain underwriting rules, risk-management principles, and regulations to ensure compliance with corporate requirements and state and federal legislation.
  • Establish and manage data flows from client companies to monitor results against established targets and plans.
  • Develop annual business goals for assigned client partners.
  • Identify new business opportunities with existing partners and coordinate with the Business Development team.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of department products and services and articulate the department's value proposition.
  • Evaluate new business and renewal submissions, and schedule and perform underwriting reviews of client companies to provide technical and strategic feedback.
  • Maintain awareness of market trends, products, market participants, and competitive practices, and identify emerging threats to the department.
  • Advise on product development regarding distribution, underwriting, and compliance considerations.
  • Coordinate reinsurance support for programs, including negotiating renewal terms and conditions and executing renewal reinsurance agreements.
  • Participate in strategic annual planning, training initiatives, and projects.
  • Manage multifunctional teams and projects to help achieve departmental goals.
  • Lead and manage a small team as the role evolves in the future.
Desired Qualifications
  • Underwriting and industry designations applicable to the area of specialization are a plus.
  • An advanced degree is a plus.
  • At least 8 years of stop loss underwriting experience and 2 years of experience with reinsurance structures, underwriting, and contracts are preferred.
  • Knowledge of Connexure and/or Kevin Ugan System is a plus.
