Requirements
  • A current Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification must be obtained within six months of hire, as applicable to the scope of service.
  • At least one year of previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery setting or acute hospital surgical department is required.
Responsibilities
  • Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel effectively.
  • Anticipate patient needs and use equipment effectively to provide appropriate care.
  • Confirm that proper techniques and procedures follow accepted standards of practice and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and storing supplies.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in pre-operative and/or post-operative areas.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse and physician in providing pre-operative and/or post-operative patient care.
  • Confirm that pre-operative testing and medical clearance are documented in the patient’s medical chart before the procedure.
  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to assess the patient’s physical and emotional status.
  • Implement and document pre-operative care regimens according to policy and procedure.
  • Recognize patients’ need for support, answer questions appropriately, and protect privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist with admitting patients to pre-operative and post-operative areas according to established guidelines.
  • Implement appropriate nursing activities to provide safe and individualized nursing care.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care by documenting patients’ responses to interventions.
  • Assist with explaining the physician’s post-operative instructions to patients and families.
  • Communicate ideas, concepts, and facts related to patient care in a logical and concise manner.
  • Assist with discharge activities according to policies and procedures.
  • Document information accurately according to policies and procedures.
  • Apply technical and specialized skills relevant to pre-operative and post-operative nursing.
  • Perform nursing functions, including monitoring vital signs, maintaining or improving respiratory function, and performing catheterizations, under Registered Nurse direction and supervision and within the state-specific Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice.
  • Administer prescribed medication and perform treatments according to the state’s definition of Licensed Practical Nurse practice.
  • Observe safety measures during patient-care activities.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies needed for patient care and diagnostic tests.
  • Demonstrate competence in emergency situations.
  • Recognize personal limitations and obtain necessary patient-care assistance from the Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain instruments, supplies, and equipment according to requirements.
  • Clean instruments properly after use and follow policies and procedures for their care and handling.
  • Observe and report the need to replenish or revise supply inventories.
