Intern - Process Chemistry - Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Small Molecules)

Process Chemistry is seeking summer interns for the Foster City, CA, campus of Gilead Sciences for 2024. The candidate should be enrolled in an undergraduate program with a major in Chemistry or a closely allied field. Interns will gain experience with state-of-the-art techniques and equipment while working as integrated members of the department. This experience will include exposure to the typical problems encountered in pharmaceutical process research and development, aspects of green chemistry, as well as process safety and engineering as applied to scale-up. 

Essential Functions: 

Working alongside a talented team of chemists, interns in Process Chemistry at Gilead will carry out research on projects relating to the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant and/or drug-like molecules while employing techniques of modern organic synthesis.  

Typical job functions will include:

• Under general supervision, design and execute synthetic chemistry experiments, analyze results, and document work using an Electronic Laboratory Notebook 
• Carry out all laboratory work in a safe manner 
• Document, summarize, and present ongoing research activities to project teams 

Key Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

• A strong interest in organic chemistry
• A minimum of two semesters of organic chemistry (with labs) completed
• Undergraduate research experience, including general familiarity with setting up reactions, common analytical techniques (TLC, NMR, HPLC), crystallization, distillation is preferred
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Undergraduate (or graduate student, if applicable) in the or related field enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
• Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
• Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
• Showcase your work with a final poster board presentation near the conclusion of your internship

Required Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must have a minimum GPA of 2.8
• Authorized to work in the United States without Sponsorship now or in the future or CPT/OPT through your University.
• Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s program at an accredited US based university or college
• Must be a Rising Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in undergrad
• Must be enrolled full-time in the Fall Semester at an accredited university/college after the completion of the internship
• Must be able to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between May and August
• Must be able to relocate if necessary and work at the designated site for the duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency with MS Office Suite
• Ability to identify issues and seek solutions
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

The expected hourly range for this position is $19.00 - $55.00.

Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including education level and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.

Benefits include paid company holidays, sick time, and housing stipends for eligible employees.
