Ramsay Health Care taps Karen Phipson for the role of GM, marketing & patient experience. Published on: 19th August 2026 at 9:57 AM Ramsay Health Care has appointed Karen Phipson to a newly created role of general manager, marketing and patient experience. The position builds marketing into a strategic growth capability as part of the company's transformation under Group CEO and managing director Natalie Davis. Phipson has joined Ramsay in the newly created role, reporting to chief commercial officer, Andrew Coombs. Her remit brings together brand, patient and referrer marketing, digital, patient experience and demand generation. Phipson joins from Life Without Barriers, where she was executive general manager, marketing and communications. She has more than 20 years' experience across marketing, sales, customer strategy and commercial transformation, including senior roles at Australian Unity Home Health and Optus. The appointment comes as Ramsay strengthens its focus on growth in local hospital catchments, more connected patient, GP and specialist journeys, and a more measurable marketing capability. Coombs said marketing would play an increasingly important role in Ramsay's growth strategy. "Our intention is to build marketing as a growth capability that improves patient experience, strengthens connections with patients, GPs and specialists, supports growth in our local hospital catchments and creates measurable commercial value," he said. "Ultimately, that means making it easier for people to find and access the right care when they need it. Karen's experience across customer, commercial growth and transformation makes her well placed to lead that next phase." Phipson said the opportunity to make healthcare easier to navigate was a key attraction of the role. Ramsay Health Care launches Australian-first trial for light-activated bladder cancer therapy. Jun 18, 2026 In an Australian first, an innovative new bladder cancer treatment clinical trial that harnesses the patient's own immune system through a novel combination of medication and light-activated therapy is now underway at five Ramsay Health Care sites. The Aura Trial is part of a global program that involves a targeted approach where the therapy is injected directly into bladder tumours and then activated with laser light. The process is designed to selectively destroy cancer cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. Principal Investigator for the trial, Professor Manish Patel, said the Aura Trial has the potential to be a significant milestone for Australian cancer care, giving patients access to a therapy that is already being explored globally. "Bladder cancer is particularly challenging due to its high rate of recurrence, often requiring repeated surgeries. This targeted, minimally invasive approach has the potential to not only treat tumours more precisely but also reduce the likelihood of tumour recurrence and improve the overall patient experience," Professor Patel said. "By participating in this international trial, Ramsay is helping to advance a new class of treatment that could reshape how bladder cancer is managed in the future." The treatment has already been trialled successfully in the United States and has been used in the treatment of retinoblastoma, helping preserve patients' eyesight by reducing the need for invasive surgery. "Ramsay's extensive national hospital network has enabled us to achieve the highest trial recruitment globally, highlighting both the scale of our organisation and our ability to connect patients with innovative new treatment options," Professor Patel said. The study is expected to enrol approximately 54 adult patients worldwide. Participants may receive up to two treatment cycles, with each cycle involving tumour injection followed by laser activation. Early results from the global trial have shown the treatment can be safely and effectively administered, with promising treatment effectiveness observed, including complete responses in some patients. The trial is taking place at Westmead Private Hospital as well as leading cancer centres in the United States.

With a market capitalisation of approximately AU$1.4 billion, Ramsay remains a significant player in global private healthcare. The increased ownership by United Super may help stabilise the company's shareholder base and support its strategic initiatives, including a shift toward value-based care.
