↑ 12%Nationwide Children's Hospital buys East Main street block for $7.6 million. Posted: Aug 31, 2026 / 12:00 PM EDT Updated: Aug 30, 2026 / 07:48 PM EDT COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) - A long-undeveloped parcel on East Main Street that has drawn redevelopment interest over the years is now part of Nationwide Children's Hospital's growing footprint near downtown Columbus. Nationwide Children's purchased the entire 3.62-acre block at 818 E. Main St. for $7.6 million on Aug. 7, according to Franklin County property records. The parcel sits on the south side of East Main Street between South 17th and South 18th streets and extends south to East Mound Street. The property is adjacent to Nationwide Children's Near East Office, a four-story office building and parking garage at 431 S. 18th St. that was completed in 2018. Turner Construction Company previously leased the East Main Street property for parking, a hospital spokesperson said. Nationwide Children's has not announced a specific development for the site. "Acquiring the property allows Nationwide Children's to plan thoughtfully for both the short-term and long-term future of a site that is now adjacent to our growing campus," the spokesperson said. The purchase adds to the hospital's holdings north of Interstate 70 while Nationwide Children's undertakes the largest construction investment in its history on its main campus south of the freeway. Nationwide Children's also owns a roughly one-third-acre parcel immediately west of the site, across South 17th Street, that it purchased in 2012, according to property records. Property records show the East Main Street parcel last sold for $575,000 to Smith Tandy Group in December 2012. The property was once owned by the Douglas Lula Foundation, associated with Columbus native and former world heavyweight boxing champion James "Buster" Douglas. The hospital already operates outpatient care locations east and west of the newly acquired property along East Main Street. Farther south, Nationwide Children's is building a 14-story acute-care tower at its main campus at 700 Children's Drive. The $1.27 billion project is expected to be completed in 2028 and add more than 430 beds. The tower is being constructed as a companion to the hospital's existing inpatient tower and will house emergency and critical care services, oncology, an expanded surgical area and a three-floor neonatal intensive care unit. Nationwide Children's has said the project represents the largest investment in the hospital's history as its campus continues to expand along the Interstate 70 corridor.
