Float is a fintech platform for business spending that combines smart corporate cards with expense management. It lets finance teams issue unlimited virtual cards for vendors and employees, fund those cards as needed, and set spending limits, all in CAD or USD. The platform provides real-time expense reporting to spot unusual activity and opportunities for savings, helping companies manage and reconcile spending quickly. Revenue comes from subscription fees and from the interest earned on clients’ cash balances. Float differentiates itself by offering 4% interest on cash balances in both CAD and USD, a strong customer-support promise, and tools designed to give businesses tighter control over spending and cash flow compared with traditional banks. The company’s goal is to automate and simplify business spending while giving teams more visibility and control over their finances, across Canadian and cross-border use.

Float launches AI finance assistant with 90% accuracy for Canadian tax coding

Float, a Canadian business finance platform serving over 7,000 companies, has launched Float Intelligence, an AI layer that automates transaction coding for corporate cards. The first capability automatically assigns GL codes and Canadian tax codes (HST, GST, PST) to transactions, reducing hours of manual work to minutes. The system uses confidence-gated coding, only auto-coding when accuracy reaches 90%, and learns from each business's specific chart of accounts. On 5,000 real Canadian transactions, Float's agent achieved 90% precision compared to 62% for general-purpose LLMs. Float runs all inference in its own secure AWS instance without sharing data between customers. During beta testing across 350 businesses, the agent achieved 95% measured precision. The feature is now available to all Float Professional plan customers.

Float, Wise, Koho, Paramount, and Brim join Payments Canada

Float, Wise, Koho, Paramount, and Brim join Payments Canada. New members are now eligible to apply for access to the upcoming real-time rail system. A handful of Canadian FinTech firms are now in line to reap the benefits of the country's incoming real-time rail (RTR) payments infrastructure system. Float, Wise, Koho, Paramount, and Brim are now members of Payments Canada, the organization that underpins the Canadian financial system announced on Tuesday. With their membership, the companies can now apply to participate in payments infrastructure projects and rely less on third-party intermediaries to handle their transactions. "Becoming members of Payments Canada is a significant step forward that will enable us to offer even faster, more affordable and more convenient international payments to Canadians and to global customers moving money to Canada," Wise chief banking and expansion officer Diana Avila said in a statement. "Joining Payments Canada reflects how far KOHO has grown within Canada's financial ecosystem." Daniel Eberhard Koho The FinTech firms became eligible for membership back in October when the Bank of Canada named them in its first tranche of registered payment service providers. The designation subjects the companies to new rules and reporting regulations under the Retail Payments Activities Act (RPAA), which came into effect in September. "Joining Payments Canada reflects how far KOHO has grown within Canada's financial ecosystem," Koho founder and CEO Daniel Eberhard said in a statement. Historically, Payments Canada has only been open to banks, credit unions, and other select traditional financial institutions, but the organization has been expanding its membership to boost competition in the Canadian financial sector. Payments Canada president and CEO Susan E. Hawkins said the organization will continue to add new qualifying members. The new members are eligible to apply for access to new infrastructure for different payment needs, like the retail batch payment system, the high-value payment system, and the forthcoming RTR system. The long-delayed RTR system is meant to facilitate instant, cheaper payments. The 2025 budget reaffirmed that it would be operational sometime this year. This week, new member Float secured nearly $100 million CAD in debt to expand the scope and flexibility of its financial products for Canadian small businesses. Another new member, United Kingdom-based cross-border payment provider Wise, says its active customers in Canada increased by more than 30 percent in 2025. CORRECTION (01/27/26): This article has been updated to reflect that new Payments Canada members will have to apply to access new infrastructure like the RTR system.

Float secures $95M in debt to expand interest-free credit for Canadian SMEs

Toronto-based Float Financial has secured nearly $100 million CAD in debt to expand its financial products for Canadian small businesses. The funding comprises $75 million from Silicon Valley Bank and $20 million from an undisclosed Canadian Schedule I bank. Founded in 2019, Float offers corporate cards, accounting services and expense-tracking software to over 5,000 Canadian SMEs. The company will use the funds to maintain four-percent interest on client deposits and scale its interest-free Charge credit product, which allows businesses flexible repayment timelines without personal guarantees. Float claims its customer base grew 60 percent year over year, with revenue increasing roughly 70 percent. The company plans to hire 50 to 60 employees across product engineering, data and design roles, focusing solely on the Canadian market rather than expanding internationally.
