In the United States, more than 4,000 people on average die from unintentional drowning each year. Drowning prevention strategies can prevent these tragedies from occurring, but knowledge gaps exist in fatal and nonfatal drowning data and understanding how to effectively implement interventions. The CDC Foundation is working in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health (GA DPH) Injury Prevention Program to provide a term-limited, one year Project Coordinator position.
The Research Coordinator will lead the efforts to identify opportunities to strengthen drowning data collection and surveillance and describe the burden and circumstances of drowning in Georgia. Under this project, the Research Coordinator will serve as a focal point to identify additional sources of drowning data, collect detailed information on the circumstances of drowning from these sources and collate this along with existing data to report on the burden and circumstances of fatal and nonfatal drowning. The Research Coordinator will be hired by CDC Foundation and work under the general direction of GA DPH Injury Prevention Program leadership. The Research Coordinator will also work closely with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
The Research Coordinator must be based near Atlanta, GA. While the position will be mostly remote, attendance at in-person meetings in Atlanta and across the state will be required. Relocation expenses are not provided.
Responsibilities
- Lead efforts to describe the burden and circumstances of drowning in Georgia and develop recommendations for an ongoing statewide system for collecting relevant child drowning data.
- Identify and engage with statewide agencies, forming collaborative and sustainable partnerships to collect detailed data on childhood drownings.
- Coordinate, facilitate, and document meetings with partners from other agencies, multi-disciplinary professionals, lay organizations, individuals, and other water safety partners.
- Analyze data and disseminate results through presentations and reports, including reports to the state legislature, CDC’s Division of Injury prevention, and the donor.
- Minimal travel (5%) may be required within the state to contribute to project goals, as necessary, and may include overnight stays.
- Lead project-related meetings and call and ensure strong adherence to project timelines
Minimum Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in public health or related field is required
- Minimum of 1 year professional public health experience is required
- Understanding of drowning or other injury prevention epidemiology is strongly desired
- Experience conducting statistical analyses in SAS, R, or other statistical software
- Experience engaging and working collaboratively with diverse partners, including regional, state and national government agencies at various levels, advocacy groups, and public health practitioners
- Experience with logistical planning and management, including meeting facilitation, problem solving and conflict management skills
- Experience disseminating and translating data/research findings for diverse audiences utilizing various tools and methods (e.g., creation of reports/presentations/fact sheets)
- Demonstrates a high degree of initiative, able to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines and work well both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
