Responsibilities
  • Understand CBC’s business needs to be effective at targeting, evaluating, and recommending the best candidates that meet CBC’s value proposition and need for the position.
  • Recruit, screen, and recommend candidates for hire.
  • Make the final hiring decision for Deckhand positions.
  • Conduct interviews and assessments to identify the best talent.
  • Coordinate, plan, and monitor open positions in junction with hiring managers.
  • Conduct reference checks and verify employment history and credentials of candidates.
  • Establish relations with regional colleges, vo-tech, and high schools to develop a source of future new hires to support recruiting plans.
  • Participate in recruiting events, career fairs, and other networking activities to expand our talent pool.
  • Schedule post-offer drug screens and medical examinations.
  • Manage the full recruitment lifecycle, from attraction to onboarding.
  • Orient new employees properly to help them understand CBC’s culture, strategy, and people, with the goal of helping them provide value early and recognize CBC’s value proposition.
  • Conduct orientation for newly hired employees.
  • Continually improve the onboarding process by keeping up to date with the latest trends, policies & procedures.
  • Regularly report on learnings and observations from recruiting activity with the goal of continuously improving our targeting of the right candidates who have the ability to be successful, long-term CBC employees.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports for newly hired employees.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and market conditions to inform recruitment strategies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years’ experience in full life cycle recruiting preferred
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time for hiring events with some overnight travel.
  • Experience with Workday technologies is preferred.
  • Experience using a variety of sourcing channels & tools preferred.
  • Knowledge of the inland barging industry is preferred.
  • College degree preferred.

Redwood Holdings Acquires Canal Barge Company

Redwood Holdings, a family-owned company, will acquire Canal Barge Company, marking its second investment in the U.S. Jones Act market after acquiring Marquette Transportation in May 2024. The acquisition will be through a new holding company that will also own Marquette. Merritt Lane will be CEO of the holding company, with David Lane and John Eckstein in leadership roles. The partnership aims to expand services and leverage shared values and expertise in marine transportation.
