Requirements
  • Must have passed a general educational development test indicating high school graduation level or hold a high school diploma.
  • For Deputy Constable Recruit, must have a combination of TCOLE certification, education, and/or work experience equaling two years prior to taking the written entry-level law enforcement examination.
  • Without TCOLE: two years of law enforcement experience (to include a certified jailer) or thirty hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade 'C' or better in each class.
  • With TCOLE (which equates to six months of work experience): eighteen months of law enforcement experience or six months of law enforcement and fifteen hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade 'C' or better in each class.
  • With TCOLE Only: a candidate can sit for the exam; if hired, remain a deputy constable recruit for 2 1/2 years until meeting minimum qualifications of 3 years work experience, then move to Deputy Constable I, grade 66, Step 1.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years; never convicted of any family violence offense.
  • Not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle; not prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
  • Must be able to pass a written examination, physical agility assessment, psychological examination, polygraph examination, and a physical examination; must undergo extensive background investigation.
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Physical/Environmental requirements include ability to perform defense tactics, sit, stand, walk, drive, run, bend, stoop, climb, crawl, climb stairs, and work varied schedules.
  • Must have ability to perform duties such as delivering and executing civil papers, writs, warrants, arrests, transfers of prisoners, and bailiff tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Delivers and executes civil papers including citations, small claims notices, injunctions, subpoenas, summons and restraining orders.
  • Delivers and executes writs involving garnishment, attachment, execution, habeas corpus, possession, sequestration, restitution, and orders of sale.
  • Delivers and executes warrants for bad checks and peace bonds.
  • Performs arrests and set outs when warranted.
  • Transfers prisoners to and from jail and the courts.
  • Performs Bailiff tasks for the Justice of the Peace, if needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.
