Requirements
  • Certifications in Medium Voltage Transformer Levels I and II; Switch Gear and Circuit Breaker Maintenance with grounding and bonding; Electrical Safety for Utilities; and Substation Maintenance I and II, obtained through the AVO Training Institute or another accredited institution or trade school, either before hiring or through training after hire.
  • Familiarity with high-voltage test equipment and the ability to understand its results.
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field is strongly preferred, or equivalent relevant qualified experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical, electronic, and/or network communications.
  • At least 5 years of experience with medium-voltage equipment.
  • Prior experience with cold-weld patch repairs and field transformer repairs.
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours occasionally to support service customer contracts.
  • Weekend and/or night work may be required depending on customer requirements at the site.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to interface directly with German counterparts for technical assistance and guidance on medium-voltage systems and attend daily or weekly meetings with them.
  • Ability to travel significantly within the United States and internationally.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including routinely lifting up to 50 pounds and working in field-service environments with occasional electrical hazards and extreme weather exposure.
Responsibilities
  • Handle medium-voltage escalations for SMA customers and suppliers while partnering with the medium-voltage engineering team in SMA AG to resolve solutions for U.S. customers and suppliers.
  • Test, troubleshoot, repair, and analyze SMA large-scale medium-voltage systems in the field, including operations and maintenance activities and site visits.
  • Apply expert knowledge and training with high-voltage test equipment to identify root causes for SMA internal quality 8D reports.
  • Develop detailed knowledge to support the creation of processes and procedures for SMA medium-voltage products and associated SMA or third-party accessories sold by SMA.
  • Determine appropriate courses of action after conducting dissolved gas analysis sampling and reviewing dissolved gas analysis reports.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts of spare parts provided by SMA.
  • Repair external leaks and cold-weld patches on medium-voltage transformers.
  • Work with high-voltage direct current, three-phase power, high alternating current voltage, and related SMA product software and firmware.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction while working to reduce field-service expenditures.
  • Collaborate with the Global Service Organization, Quality, and suppliers to provide customers with root cause analyses of failures and keep customers informed of root-cause-analysis status.
  • Perform and maintain maintenance activities according to the SMA product maintenance manual at assigned sites covered by SMA customer contracts.
  • Perform other assigned or required duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with pad-mounted transformers, medium-voltage terminations, and switchgear operation.
  • Knowledge of solar and/or alternative-energy markets.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
  • Advanced knowledge of power-plant measurement devices and techniques.
