Requirements
  • Training and understanding of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements and patient confidentiality.
  • One to two or more years of experience in a surgery center is preferred.
  • A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or basic electrocardiogram/arrhythmia identification certification is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the ERM system is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
  • Willingness to submit to a background check and, for Ambulatory Surgery Centers, a drug screen is required.
  • Ability to execute tasks independently, maintain concentration, multitask, prioritize work, and interact with large groups of people in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical requirements, including lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, repetitive hand and wrist movements, close visual acuity, and remaining stationary for prolonged periods.
Responsibilities
  • Assess patient status during admission to the preoperative area, operating room, and postoperative area and on a continuing basis.
  • Provide safe, therapeutic, quality patient care using the nursing process and nursing diagnoses, setting priorities and coordinating interventions to achieve expected outcomes and readiness for discharge.
  • Document nursing interventions, patient responses, activities, and care according to standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicate patient-condition information to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, management, and other staff who require it.
  • Safely carry out physician orders correctly and promptly.
  • Initiate and participate in patient and family education and assess learning needs.
  • Participate in preoperative and postoperative phone calls and communicate problems to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain competencies for the Registered Nurse role, including operating-room circulating duties such as instrument and sponge identification, counting and care, and surgical-site skin preparation.
  • Administer and monitor conscious sedation, including airway protection and assessment and support of sedated patients.
  • Protect sedated and anesthetized patients by identifying safety hazards and minimizing exposure while maintaining privacy and body temperature.
  • Apply safety principles, aseptic technique, sterile technique, and universal precautions.
  • Assess, anticipate, and implement appropriate care throughout the surgical process and correlate clinical data with nursing care.
  • Prioritize work to meet changing department needs and perform nursing care in the assigned area based on standards of care and practice.
  • Adhere to confidentiality, infection-control, safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal-appearance policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor and provide direction and leadership to staff.
  • Follow established emergency procedures and direct and provide patient care during emergency situations.
  • Make decisions about Center-based problems.
  • Participate in the orientation of nursing and ancillary staff as requested.
  • Participate in developing standardized patient-education programs.
  • Participate in quality-improvement activities, including identifying cost-reduction and efficiency opportunities.
  • Work to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center.
  • Maintain accountability for professional practice and continued professional growth through educational materials, in-services, and seminars.
  • Flex work hours as needed or requested by the Manager.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
