Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Assist charge nurse with planning delivery of patient care for the shift; contribute to overall unit planning and improvement
  • Provide precepting and competency validation for new hires and for new procedures
  • Teach nursing students
  • Delegate to other RNs, Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants as indicated
  • Coordinate assigned team
  • Communicate expectations to assigned staff (interventions; report back; etc.)
  • Identify improvement opportunities; communicate information through chain of command; manage unusual events
  • Perform nursing process including assessment, nursing diagnosis, developing the plan of care and the education plan; implementation of interventions, evaluation of interventions and revision of plan as needed; provide education and advocacy to patients
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements including CMS Conditions of Participation, Title 22, California Department of Public Health regulations, DNV-GL/National Integrated Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations standards, and other applicable regulations
  • Support department manager and director in quality improvement and growth of unit services; leadership in collaboration with co-workers and other departments; management of efficient services with meaningful and valuable outcomes
  • RNs are expected to practice to the full extent of their legal scope of practice; make judgments and decisions about patient care based on assessments
  • Provide a healing environment for recovery and safe passage of patients through their episode of care; prevention of harm; educate patient about condition and self-care actions; educate about abnormal findings and reporting to caregiver; provide comfort and compassionate care
  • Planning: assist charge nurse with planning delivery of patient care for the shift; contribute to overall unit planning and improvement
  • Directing: precepting and competency validating new hires and new procedures; teaching nursing students
  • Delegating: as indicated to other RNs, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants
  • Coordinating: assigned team
  • Communicating: expectations to assigned staff; information through chain of command; unusual events; other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
  • BSN is desired (if not upon hire, will obtain within 5 years preferred)
  • One year clinical experience in an acute care setting preferred
  • Experience in treating orthopedic and stroke patient populations preferred
  • For Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses: one year nursing experience in an acute care setting (ICU, stepdown, or ER) preferred; one year+ IR, electrophysiology, or Cardiac Catheterization Lab experience preferred
  • Certification in clinical specialty or management desired
  • Specific unit certifications such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP and AB508 within specified timeframes
  • NIHSS within 30 days of hire, ENPC within 12 months, etc.
  • Certification in orthopedic, medical-surgical or other specialty preferred
