Xero debuts embedded payroll and advanced payment capabilities. Global small business platform Xero unveiled a series of major product updates across its payment, payroll, and bookkeeping suites at Xerocon US. Underpinned by its "3x3" strategy, the expansion introduces Xero Payroll (powered by Gusto) alongside Melio Expense Management, uniting core accounting, payroll, payments, and tax workflows into a single connected financial ecosystem for small businesses and accounting advisors. The announcements also highlighted new automated capabilities within Xero's agentic AI framework, JAX. Designed to minimize administrative manual labor, these innovations deliver real-time financial tracking and actionable data insights to Xero's global base of more than 5 million subscribers. Embedded payroll built for small business cash flow. Xero Payroll, powered by Gusto, integrates directly into the core Xero interface, allowing business owners and financial advisors to oversee payroll, vendor payments, and daily cash flow from a single dashboard. The embedded solution offers: Unlimited Payroll Processing: Supports regular pay runs alongside direct deposit distributions for both full-time employees and independent contractors. Automated Tax Compliance: Calculates, files, and remits federal, state, and local payroll taxes automatically to maintain compliance. Integrated Benefits & Self-Service: Manages employee benefit deductions while providing staff access to self-service portals for pay stubs and tax documentation. "Small businesses shouldn't have to stitch together multiple tools to manage their finances, and their accountants shouldn't have to untangle multiple systems to see the full picture," said Matan Bar, US CEO of Xero. "Today's announcements demonstrate our continued investment in the US market, helping our customers to get more done in one fully unified, AI-powered financial management platform." Streamlining Expense Management and client communications via Melio. After Xero acquired Melio in 2025, it extended its B2B payment platform by incorporating Melio Expense Management. As an accounting-agnostic application, it records and categorizes card purchases instantly without necessitating that firms change their credit cards or forgo the rewards program they enjoy. It records the transactions automatically and matches them to categories before feeding them into the general ledger. Additionally, Melio introduced Casper, an AI-powered client management tool built for accounting firms. Operating across all major ledgers, Casper flags missing documentation, automates client outreach for receipts, and streamlines month-end closing tasks while keeping human accountants in control. Expanding B2B payment infrastructure and developer apis. To accelerate payout speed, Melio expanded its 24/7/365 instant payment capabilities, allowing businesses to execute transfers during weekends and holidays. Concurrently, the company debuted the Melio API in closed beta a B2B payout architecture giving developers direct access to ACH, real-time payments, virtual cards, wire transfers, and paper checks without requiring payees to complete separate platform onboarding.
Repay's Visa connection and other digital transactions news briefs from 8/20/26. * Payments provider Repay Holdings Corp. announced it has a reseller agreement with Visa Platform Connect, a service that lets acquirers and independent software vendors link directly to the Visa Acceptance Platform and VisaNet. * Ninety-one percent of Canadian consumers fear their online data could be used to make impersonation easier or disclose answers to security questions typically asked, found a new survey from Capco, a management and technology consultancy. Their top three fraud concerns are card or card data theft, cited by 45%, identity theft, 45%, and account takeover, 41%. Capco surveyed 1,000 Canadian adults. * Xero, a payroll, payments, and accounting service for small businesses, and its Melio unit introduced Melio Expense Management, a service that lets small businesses track and categorize card expenses in real time. Xero acquired Melio last year. * Wisconsin-based Prevail Bank has chosen Jack Henry & Associates Inc. technologies to support various banking services, including Tap2Local, a platform that lets small businesses accept digital payments, according to a Jack Henry announcement. * Travelling the Fairways, a golf-vacation provider concentrating on Europe, has adopted Flywire as its payments processor, replacing an unnamed predecessor company. * Versapay named former EasyPark and Worldpay executive Glen Braganza chief financial officer.
Xero expands AI, payroll and payments tools for businesses. Thu, 20th Aug 2026 (Today) Xero has introduced new payroll, payments and AI features for small businesses and accountants, bringing more financial tasks into its platform. The updates cover bookkeeping, expense management, cash flow and month-end work, alongside broader integrations with Microsoft 365, Claude and ChatGPT. Xero is positioning the changes as part of a wider effort to reduce the number of separate tools used by small businesses and accounting practices. At the centre of the launch is JAX, Xero's AI platform, designed to simplify financial operations from document collection through to reconciliation and reporting. The system works within Xero's ledger and updates records in real time as tasks are completed. JAX can identify unreconciled items, duplicate entries, missing documents and anomalies, then help users resolve them. Once records pass a health check, Xero Partner Hub can highlight issues such as cash flow patterns or unusual profit and loss movements across a practice's clients. Another addition is Smart Document Capture, which reads source documents and extracts data directly into Xero, removing the need to export or sync information with a separate application. Auto Bank Reconciliation is also being expanded. The tool automates matching between transactions and bank feeds, explains each match and flags exceptions that need human review. According to Xero, accountants and bookkeepers using the feature save about 50% of their monthly bank reconciliation time. More than 100 million transactions have been auto-reconciled since the tool was launched. Xero is also adding document request functions in Partner Hub. The system can ask clients for documents, send reminders, respond to clarifications and match files with transactions, while still requiring customer approval at each stage. Cash flow management is another focus. Xero said JAX will identify possible cash flow shortfalls before they emerge and help businesses create a plan, while also supporting payment follow-ups and bill protection tools intended to improve oversight of money coming in and going out. Diya Jolly, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Xero, set out the company's reasoning for the move. "Every hour a small business owner or accountant spends chasing paperwork or guessing what's next is an hour they're not spending on their customers and growth," Jolly said. "JAX changes that, giving customers a trusted system of action with real-time visibility and forward-looking insight, without asking them to give up control or compromise on accuracy. That's Accountable Intelligence and the standard we believe AI should deliver: less time spent on the busywork of running a business, and more time spent building one." Practise tools Xero Partner Hub is being developed to show live book health, work status and month-end readiness in one view across a practice's client base. That would give firms a consolidated picture of progress and outstanding work instead of requiring staff to switch between separate workflows. Xero also outlined XeroForce, a natural-language AI agent builder based on Xero OS. It now includes a month-end agent that can handle tasks ranging from reviewing reconciliation status to preparing manual journal entries for prepayments and amortisation before presenting its actions for approval, according to the company. Integration push Outside its own software, Xero is widening access to live financial data through third-party tools. Its Microsoft 365 Copilot integration is being extended into Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Copilot Cowork, allowing financial data from Xero to appear in charts, tables and documents. Xero is also preparing a Xero OpenAI connector for ChatGPT across Chat, Work and Codex. Users will soon be able to switch between client organisations while using these integrations, a change aimed at making it easier for advisers to work across multiple accounts. Xero's app ecosystem now includes more than 1,000 certified applications. The company also reported a fourfold increase in new app registrations since 2025, with custom apps accounting for about 20% of connections into the ecosystem. Usage of Xero's MCP Server has risen tenfold between December 2025 and May 2026, according to the company, supporting more than 1 million API calls as of June 2026. The figures point to rising demand from software developers and firms seeking to build more tailored workflows around Xero's accounting data. Xero said the wider AI push is built on what it calls Accountable Intelligence within Xero OS, drawing on two decades of proprietary data and infrastructure used by 5 million customers globally.
XeroCon Denver 2026: what a global Xero user+partner conference means for growing firms. CPA Practice Advisor reports that Xero held its semi-annual user and partner conference, XeroCon, in Denver. The event convened users and partners of Xero's cloud financial platform and signals ongoing vendor engagement with accounting firms. What the source says CPA Practice Advisor's item notes that Xero hosted its semi-annual XeroCon in Denver, bringing together users and partners of its business financial technology platform. The description focuses on the conference as a convening of Xero's ecosystem rather than on specific product announcements. Why this matters to CPA firms Conferences by major cloud-accounting vendors are moments when product roadmaps, partner programs, integration opportunities and implementation practices are reinforced. For growing firms, regular vendor engagement can influence software roadmaps firms standardize on, affect training needs for staff, and change the kinds of implementation projects that drive billable work. The clear implication is that firms that support or resell Xero, or who integrate with its partner ecosystem, should treat such gatherings as signals to revisit practice workflows, update onboarding checklists, and plan for capacity to support migration or integration projects. Operational and economic implications From a capacity and workforce perspective, vendor momentum can shift demand toward specialized implementation and advisory labor-roles that often command higher rates than compliance work. Firms should evaluate whether to allocate headcount to platform specialization, procure training budgets, or establish partner-level reseller relationships. Client capacity is affected when multiple clients choose to migrate to the same vendor: consolidated toolsets can create scale efficiencies but also temporary surges in human labor for conversions, reconciliations, and client training. Risk and professional judgment considerations include ensuring staff are competent with new integrations and that client data migrations preserve audit trails and internal controls. In short, XeroCon underscores the ongoing vendor-driven dynamics that shape firm workflows, staffing, and economics.
More than 1 in 3 Australian small business owners don't know if they made a profit last month. Canberra, Australia - 13 August 2026 - New research from Xero, the global small business platform, reveals a significant financial confidence gap among Australian small business owners, leaving many without the skills needed to understand their numbers, manage cash flow and grow. The research found more than one in three (35%) small business owners don't often know whether they made a profit in the last month. It also revealed a sharp disconnect between how confident owners feel and what advisors see in practice. While many (85%) small business owners say they are confident in handling financial issues, 90% of accountants and bookkeepers believe small business owners lack the skills to manage the financial side of their business effectively. In response, Xero today launched Xero For Good: Financial fitness, a free educational program to help Australian small business owners build financial skills through practical resources, mentoring and community support. The program is also backed by the Xero For Good: Financial fitness taskforce, meeting for the first time today at Parliament House in Canberra. The taskforce brings together representatives from small business, finance, education, industry and advocacy to examine the barriers limiting small business financial confidence. Xero's research found: * Almost a third of small business owners (32%) aren't regularly paying themselves a wage * When tested on 10 basic business finance questions, just 37% answered them all correctly * More than one in three small business owners (35%) have turned to public AI tools for business advice, while 95% of accountants and bookkeepers believe small businesses receive financial misinformation, mainly from social media * Three in four small business owners agree Australia's education system does not equip future entrepreneurs with the financial skills they need to run a business, and 84% of accountants and bookkeepers agree The research also shows financial ambiguity is taking a practical and emotional toll: 41% are too afraid to ask questions about financial management because they feel they should already know the answers, and 22% feel overwhelmed when dealing with business finances. "Starting a small business is a leap of faith, but too many owners haven't had the opportunity to set themselves up for success. More than one in three often don't even know if they made a profit last month. That's why we're calling for financial education earlier, and bringing government and industry together to act on it," said Angad Soin, Managing Director Australia and New Zealand and Global Chief Strategy Officer at Xero. "Financial literacy shouldn't be a privilege, it should be a right. Xero For Good: Financial fitness gives owners the chance to understand their numbers on their own terms, in five minutes on their phone, not buried in long financial theory at midnight or joining a webinar while they are trying to run their business." Small businesses experiencing social or demographic disadvantages have significantly less financial confidence The strain is greater for those facing social or demographic disadvantage. Three quarters (75%) say financial uncertainty keeps them up at night, more than 1.5 times the rate of those not facing disadvantage (48%). They are also more likely to be too afraid to ask questions (69% vs. 26%) and to ignore messages from the ATO if they don't understand them (35% vs. 9%). Dr Leanne Faulkner, small business mental health expert, said the findings reflect a deeper link between financial confidence and wellbeing. "The more financially literate a small business owner is, the better equipped they are to have control and make choices about work on their own terms. Those without these tools are more likely to feel it's feast or famine. Financial literacy means exercising more choice, and that's where a program like this can make a real difference." A free program to close the gap At the centre of the Xero For Good: Financial fitness program is a resource hub, which includes bite-sized videos that can be viewed on demand in less than five minutes via mobile, and practical guides covering topics like cash flow, financial statements, budgeting and business finances. The Xero For Good Ambassador Program will also connect small business owners with volunteer accountants and bookkeepers for free mentoring, helping them apply what they learn to their own business. The third component of the program is the Xero For Good: Financial fitness taskforce. Drawing on Xero's research, policy expertise and grassroots insight, the taskforce will explore practical ideas to strengthen national support for small business financial literacy. It will develop a set of practical recommendations for government, to be published in early 2027. Starting members include: * Verity Hare - Founder, Tradie Wives * Carly Findlay, OAM - disability activist, writer and artist * Greg Jennings - Chief Engagement Officer, Beyond Blue * Jeanette Cheah - CEO and Co-Founder, HEX * Adele Tahan - Pharmacist, Adore Compounding Pharmacy * Amy Low - CEO, The Social Outfit * Jarvis Archer - Restructuring Expert, Business Reset * Ahmed Latif - Founder, Distinction Homes * Huy Truong - Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, Thrive Refugee Enterprise Media Contact Xero Australia Jess Brophy +61 431 268 549 [email protected] About the research Xero commissioned this report in partnership with One Picture, an independent research agency, to examine financial confidence levels among Australian small business owners, and how accountants and bookkeepers perceive this in 2026. The findings are based on discussions and a survey conducted between 20 March and 15 April 2026, with a random sample of 750 small business decision-makers, and 500 accountants and bookkeepers working in practice and serving small business and sole trader clients.
