Requirements
  • Provide nursing care according to individual patient needs and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
  • Complete education as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) through an approved program.
  • Hold current LPN licensure in Illinois.
  • Obtain CPR certification according to American Heart Association guidelines within 30 days of hire.
  • Assume accountability and responsibility for personal practice and delegated responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Interview patients regarding nursing history and health knowledge, assess maintenance needs, and document findings in the medical record.
  • Obtain medical information, chief complaints, vital signs, and diagnostic test results for physician examinations and document them in the medical record.
  • Protect patient rights, advocate for patients, and address service complaints.
  • Make referrals to other agencies or providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Screen patient problems in person or by phone and resolve them through advice or referral to a physician.
  • Provide home-care instructions for procedures and medications.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative instruction for specific surgical or medical procedures.
  • Document patient education in the medical record.
  • Administer respiratory therapeutic treatments and document them according to policy.
  • Administer irrigations, including Foley catheter irrigations, enemas, and ear washes, and document results in the medical record.
  • Collect specimens, including cultures, and provide coding.
  • Assist with cast application and cast removal, provide patient instruction, and document in the medical record.
  • Perform catheterization, suture removal, and dressing changes in accordance with infection-control policy, and document results in the medical record.
  • Administer medications by permitted routes, including heparin, excluding intravenous blood and blood products, intravenous push medications, chemotherapy, and adding medication to existing intravenous infusions.
  • Assist physicians with patient examinations and treatment by handing instruments, providing dressings, and preparing equipment according to infection-control policy.
  • Orient new personnel to the specialty.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to patients and families.
  • Perform pre-certifications and insurance referrals as necessary.
  • Schedule procedures and surgeries as needed.
  • Comply with Springfield Clinic incident-reporting policies and procedures.
  • Complete required Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Springfield Clinic training.
  • Adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Maintain patient and staff confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through education programs and current journals and literature, and document information for yearly evaluation.
  • Perform other assigned job duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Perform intravenous therapy after successfully completing an approved course.
  • Serve on the STAT Code Team.
  • Serve as a Health Care Assistant according to hospital policy.
  • Occasional lifting may be required for orthopedics, geriatrics, and internal medicine.
