Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Zero to two years of experience is required for this entry-level role.
  • Comprehensive experience performing aerospace structural stress analysis and design, including composite materials; experience with metals is a plus.
  • Ability to follow aerospace industry practices and understand overall load paths and efficient use of structural concepts and materials.
  • Experience performing classical hand stress analysis and finite element analysis with Nastran, Abaqus, or OptiStruct.
  • Experience using FEM meshers such as HyperWorks, FEMAP, or ANSA.
  • CAD competence with CATIA, 3DX, or NX is a plus.
  • Proficiency applying failure theories, preparing structural analysis reports, and identifying critical load conditions and margins of safety.
  • Knowledge of panel buckling, local buckling, crippling, material strength, and classical in-plane laminate stress analysis.
  • Experience with ply-based maximum-strain and Tsai-Wu approaches, laminate-based AML and polynomial strength prediction approaches, and associated material allowables, including damage.
  • Experience analyzing composite fasteners for bearing and bypass, and bonded joints for out-of-plane interlaminar shear and peel stress analysis, or residual-strength energy solutions.
  • Experience sizing structures for minimum weight and designing composite laminates, including ply-drop ratios and layup patterns on complicated surfaces such as padups around cutouts and bolted joints.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and presentation skills.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Learn and use HyperX for preliminary and detail analysis and design sizing optimization of full airframes and space vehicles.
  • Use HyperX and other software tools to analyze and design customer airframes and space launch vehicles.
  • Perform trade studies for weight savings and part producibility, conduct preliminary and detail design and analysis, and document design and analysis results.
  • Report directly to NASA and industry original equipment manufacturer customers, verify and describe external loadings and their resolution into critical internal mechanical and thermal load paths, and explain resulting optimum designs and margins of safety.
  • Resolve project issues in a timely manner, create workaround procedures when needed, and escalate urgent problems requiring deeper knowledge to appropriate engineering leads.
  • Participate in overall HyperX software testing and provide suggestions for software development and modification.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with metals in aerospace structural analysis and design.
  • Master's degree.
  • CAD competence with CATIA, 3DX, or NX.

Collier Aerospace provides computer-aided engineering software for the aerospace field, with its HyperX product for stress analysis and sizing optimization. HyperX runs structural analyses to calculate stresses and loads on aircraft and space components and uses the results to optimize part sizes to reduce vehicle weight for both composites and metals. The company differentiates itself by focusing specifically on aerospace CAE and weight-optimization, backed by industry trust as a leading provider in this niche. Its goal is to help designers create lighter, safer vehicles by delivering precise analysis and efficient optimization tools.

What believers are saying

  • Radia selected HyperX for WindRunner structural sizing in February 2025.
  • NASA awarded Collier Aerospace $149,734 for machine-learning material design ending March 2026.
  • Release Notes show active product development through August 2026, signaling customer retention.

What critics are saying

  • Autodesk, Ansys, and Dassault dominate CAE, compressing Collier Aerospace’s pricing power.
  • HyperX depends on aerospace programs; a WindRunner delay would hit demand quickly.
  • As a small Newport News vendor, one lost flagship account threatens survival.

What makes Collier Aerospace unique

  • HyperX 2026.1.16 added fastener pull-through and Abaqus 2026 support in June 2026.
  • Collier Aerospace specializes in aerospace structural sizing, failure analysis, and margin reporting.
  • NASA and DoD grants validate its niche optimization technology and government relationships.
