Senior Coordinator

Position Summary:

Located in Northeast Los Angeles in a 282-acre park, the Audubon Center at Debs Park (Center), uses a holistic, people-focused approach to conservation work and serves as a community hub for environmental work and advocacy work in Los Angeles and across the Audubon network.

Reporting to the Manager of Public Programs, the Senior Coordinator, Education will develop and lead environmental education and public programming at Debs Park. This role focuses on engaging the public through habitat restoration projects, outdoor field trips, classroom visits, and community science initiatives while also overseeing the Audubon Youth Leaders Program. The Senior Coordinator will plan and implement programs for families and adults, both at the Center and in local neighborhoods, working in collaboration with partner organizations. Additionally, they will help establish, maintain, and expand habitat restoration sites with support from the Manager of Public Programs and the Center Director. To enhance the Center’s outreach, the Senior Coordinator will create engaging social media content, assist with website updates, and maintain communication with the Center’s audience. This position is ideal for an educator passionate about fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship.

This position is in-person at the Center, Sunday through Thursday from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM, with occasional flexibility for remote work. Some programs and events may take place outside of regular hours, including evenings or weekends.

Compensation:

$68,640 / year

Essential Functions

• Develop, implement, and deliver creative and engaging nature science and conservation education activities and curriculum for grades pre-K to college such as onsite field trips, classroom visits, and community programs. Maintain and improve existing curricula through enhancing activities and upkeeping supplies.

• Coordinate logistics of programs with teachers and other audiences, including marketing and promotion, registration, scheduling, and pre/post visit communication.

• With assistance from Manager, Public Programs, develop and deliver fun and hands-on environmental education curriculum and Audubon Youth Leaders. This includes ensuring participant safety, scheduling programs, and follow up surveys.

• Coordinate and lead educational habitat restoration events that highlight the role of California native plants in supporting climate-resilient bird habitats. Responsibilities include event scheduling and maintaining accurate restoration activity logs.

• Lead trainings for new volunteers and interns in programming work such as habitat restoration, field trips, and activities for public program events with assistance from Manager, Public Programs.

• Lead activities during public events at the Center, such as Community Movie Nights, Community Bird Walks, and more.

• Assist Manager, Public Programs with staffing, training, and oversight of seasonal education staff, including interns and volunteer educators.

• Collect and report data on public programs and participants, including evaluations, registration numbers, anecdotes, and photos for grant, donor, and annual reporting purposes. Work closely with the Manager, Public Programs, to develop, implement and lead community science programs and projects.

• Collaborate with Audubon colleagues and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and ensure these are incorporated into Audubon Center at Debs Park’s programming.

• As necessary, assist with the maintenance of the nature center’s buildings and grounds.

• Participate in development of effective promotional materials and marketing strategies for community programs, including regular updates to upcoming events flyers and Center newsletters. Collaborate with other Center and State staff for additional support and strategy.

• Interact professionally and positively with students, teachers, parents, and visitors.

• Participate in on-the-job and/or formal training opportunities.

• Support reporting and development projects in conjunction with the Public Programs Manager, Center Director or other Audubon staff.

• Work closely with the Operations Manager to coordinate on-site research projects.

• Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.

• Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities.

• Maintains and fosters culture of safety.

• Other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

• At least three years’ experience working with children and adults in an outdoor educational setting.

• Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, education or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

• Two years of experience developing, organizing, coordinating and delivering outdoor activities and curriculum for diverse age ranges with an emphasis on informal outdoor education.

• Experience leading groups and teaching groups of students up to 20 or more.

• Must enjoy working with the public and children of all ages in an outdoor setting.

• Experience in training, giving feedback, and working with volunteers and interns.

• Knowledge of local (Los Angeles County) birds, plants, wildlife and California natural and cultural history encouraged.

• Experience in planning and developing habitat restoration work.

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills with ability to effectively engage with program attendees, volunteers, public visitors, board members and other staff.

• Must be a self-starter with an eye for detail and organization, possess sound judgment and decision-making skills, and the ability to bring new ideas to the table. Talent for working with a team, as well as independently, with a positive attitude and enthusiasm.

• Ability to operate – or willingness to learn to operate – various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

• Willing to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions and transport up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.

• Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

• Tech-savvy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Canva or Photoshop, and other web-based applications.

• Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with ability & willingness to travel locally, and surrounding communities when necessary.

• Ability to work long, flexible hours when needed, including evenings and weekends.
