Southern Company signs 25-year OpenAI power deal as part of $81B AI data centre infrastructure plan

Southern Company has signed a 25-year deal to power OpenAI's planned $30 billion data centre in Georgia, requiring 3.2 GW starting in 2028. The utility now has over 11 GW of contracted large-load customers, with another 23 GW either contracted or nearing finalisation. The company's five-year capital plan stands at $81 billion, up 28% since January 2025. It includes 10 GW of new generation capacity and over 500 miles of transmission lines. Southern's first-quarter data centre sales grew 42% year over year. Management projects 10% electric sales growth from 2026 through 2030 and 7-9% adjusted EPS growth through 2028 and beyond. More than 90% of Southern's earnings come from state-regulated utilities, making earnings more predictable than merchant power competitors.
