Requirements
  • Personal experience as a recipient of services for people with psychiatric conditions and being well along in personal recovery is required.
  • One year of experience working with young adults experiencing co-occurring disorders in addition to psychiatric conditions is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license must be presented at the time of employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have maintained a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • If driving, the employee must maintain a safe driving record subject to annual checks; if using a personal vehicle, the employee must maintain adequate insurance.
  • The employee must be able to meet the stated physical requirements, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting at least 25 pounds, operating office equipment, assisting clients with daily living tasks, and communicating with clients, staff, and external representatives.
  • CPR certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • NET certification is required.
  • The employee must hold Certified Peer Specialist credentials or successfully complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring Training within six months of hire.
  • The employee must be competent in the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile, knowledgeable about the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Child, Youth and Family and Adult services systems, and skilled in Achieve My Plan.
  • The employee must be able to assist young adults in directing their Wraparound teams toward expressed goals, use mediation and conflict-resolution skills, maintain confidentiality, use advocacy and crisis-intervention techniques, make independent judgments, balance competing priorities, and work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
  • Work with young adults to enhance self-direction and empowerment.
  • Provide one-to-one support, coaching, and modeling to improve engagement in services.
  • Carry a caseload of young adults for individual peer mentoring.
  • Provide core staffing for the Drop-In Center.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing efforts to educate young adults and community stakeholders about the program and services.
  • Help identify and access existing and new services and service providers that benefit young adults.
  • Help young adults develop supportive relationships and community connections.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and wellness practices, including substance-misuse prevention.
  • Support young adults in developing self-sufficiency and positive employment behaviors.
  • Help young adults identify needs and goals related to education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation, and integrate them into their Wraparound Plans.
  • Help young adults communicate and work effectively with service providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Help young adults develop life skills, find their voices, and identify and use their strengths.
  • Use Achieve My Plan, Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other evidence-informed or best-practice models as trained.
  • Use personal lived experience in a purposeful, strength-based way to promote discovery and recovery.
  • Inspire hope and future focus in young adults.
  • Attend in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Help young adults develop self-advocacy skills individually or in groups.
  • Serve as a bridge between child- and young-adult-serving mental health systems on behalf of young adults.
  • Maximize the choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making of young adults in planning, delivering, and evaluating services.
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in a human services discipline is strongly preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is preferred.
  • Access to an operational and insured vehicle and willingness to use it to transport young adults are preferred.
  • Bilingual and bicultural applicants are preferred.
