We are seeking a highly motivated Data Science Intern to join our group in developing computational approaches and workflows to design and optimize drug-like properties for novel biologics. This role provides the opportunity to leverage large-scale proprietary datasets and work with subject matter experts on cross-functional teams to solve challenging problems in how we discover and engineer the next generation of biotherapeutics.
Specifically, the successful candidate will work on provisioning data for computationally-driven biologics development efforts. The individual will build Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) pipelines from various internal and external data sources. The intern may also build customized bioinformatics pipelines and data visualizations that inform biologics discovery, tools which may transition to productionized software, in collaboration with data engineers / software engineers. This position will have access to a cutting-edge tech stack customized for large molecule discovery, such as high-performance computing environments, cloud compute infrastructure, a vast data ecosystem, and support from experts of all sorts. The intern will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with scientists in computational and experimental groups in designing novel drugs that will impact patients.
- Build custom data and bioinformatics tools, pipelines and workflows supporting computationally-driven large molecule discovery, following best practices of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data
- Collaborate with computational and experimental scientists to troubleshoot data issues in analysis; solve ad-hoc data problems as needed
- Communicate the utility and usage of the tools and insights to collaborators
Qualifications & Experience
- Excellent problem-solving / quantitative reasoning skills; minimum of 2 years experience with general data science tech stack: Python, pandas, numpy, scipy, scikit-learn; basic command-line / shell scripting fluency; fluency with common IDEs such as VS Code, PyCharm, Jupyter
- Data visualization skills: fluency with Python or R libraries such as matplotlib, seaborn, Streamlit, Dash, Shiny
- Basic software engineering best practices such as packaging, virtual environments, Git version control, some knowledge of databases, including SQL
- Some experience with biological sequence analysis
- Preferred: basic knowledge of molecular biology, immunology, cloud computing such as AWS, GCP
- Preferred: educational background in bioinformatics, computational biology, biophysics, bioengineering, chemical engineering
- Excellent communication skills, capable of collaboration, yet a sense of independence and initiative, and a curious growth mindset
