Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • The candidate must hold current appropriate state licensure and meet the practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • The candidate must hold current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Basic Life Support certification or successfully complete it.
  • The candidate must have less than two years of nephrology nursing experience as a Registered Nurse for this entry-level designation.
  • The position requires direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasionally moving equipment up to 200 pounds and lifting chemical and water solutions up to 30 pounds as high as five feet.
  • The candidate may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases or materials.
  • The candidate may be required to travel to training sites or other facilities.
Responsibilities
  • The Registered Nurse provides and coordinates clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation, for an assigned group of patients.
  • The Registered Nurse performs ongoing systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment, documents findings in the medical record, adjusts the treatment plan as indicated, and notifies appropriate clinical personnel or the physician as needed.
  • The Registered Nurse assesses, collaborates on, and documents patient and family learning needs and provides initial and ongoing education.
  • The Registered Nurse directs and provides, in collaboration with direct and ancillary patient care staff, all aspects of the daily delivery of safe and effective hemodialysis therapy.
  • The Registered Nurse administers prescribed medications or medications authorized under approved algorithms and documents medical justification and effectiveness.
  • The Registered Nurse initiates or assists with emergency response measures.
  • The Registered Nurse serves as a resource for the health care team and participates in staff training and new-staff orientation as assigned.
  • The Registered Nurse ensures correct laboratory collection, processing, and shipping procedures and reschedules missed or insufficient laboratory collections.
  • The Registered Nurse identifies expected outcomes and documents and updates the nursing assessment and plan of care through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • The Registered Nurse ensures patient awareness of transplant and treatment-modality options.
  • The Registered Nurse completes Clinical Advancement Program requirements to advance.
  • The Registered Nurse may delegate appropriate tasks to direct patient-care staff, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Patient Care Technicians.
  • After completing required education and training and meeting experience requirements, the Registered Nurse may provide assigned oversight of Patient Care Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, or Registered Nurses as a Team Leader or designated Nurse in Charge.
