CSL reports 2% drop in annual profit to $3.14B on weak plasma sales

Australian biopharmaceutical company CSL reported a 2% decline in annual profit on Tuesday, as its core plasma division experienced falling revenue. The company posted an underlying net profit after tax of $3.14 billion on a constant currency basis for the year ended 30 June, down from $3.22 billion the previous year. CSL is among the world's leading flu vaccine manufacturers. The results reflect challenges in the plasma business, which forms a significant part of the company's operations.

CSL to split Seqirus vaccine unit as shares slide 50% amid restructure and cost cuts

CSL has announced a restructuring plan including the separation of its Seqirus influenza vaccine business into a standalone entity, alongside workforce reductions and plasma collection centre closures. Management cited prolonged margin pressures and operational challenges as drivers for the changes. The announcement follows a sharp share price decline, with CSL trading at A$124.84, down 27.4% year-to-date and 50.1% over the past year. Three-year and five-year returns show declines of 56.3% and 51.0% respectively. The restructuring aims to simplify operations and refocus capital on higher-returning areas. Separating Seqirus could provide clearer visibility into CSL's core plasma and specialty therapies businesses, whilst allowing independent capital allocation decisions. However, investors face execution risks typical of separations of this scale, including one-off charges and operational disruption.

CSL shares hit 2017 low as Pentagon scraps flu vaccine mandate for military personnel

Australian biotech CSL extended losses on Thursday, falling to its lowest level since August 2017, after the US Pentagon scrapped its flu vaccine mandate for military personnel. The stock dropped as much as 0.8%, bringing yearly losses to over 25%. The policy reversal threatens demand from a key institutional buyer, compounding CSL's existing challenges. The company's Seqirus vaccines unit generated $2.17 billion in revenue in fiscal 2025, representing 14% of total revenue. CSL has faced sustained pressure from slowing demand for plasma-derived therapies, higher costs and multiple earnings downgrades. The stock plunged 39% last year, its biggest annual drop since 2002. Analysts cite concerns over falling US flu vaccination rates, weaker Seqirus earnings and delayed strategic plans.
