Responsibilities
  • Organizes, directs, and coordinates functions and activities in the diet office to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates and assigns work and establishes goals and priorities for diet clerks.
  • Monitors and assists with patient meal orders or menu entry as required.
  • Ensures standards of quality, hygiene, and efficiency are met throughout the food service operation.
  • Resolves problems encountered by employees and patients during the course of the assignment.
  • Alerts supervisor to problems and needs concerning equipment and supplies.
  • Detects and reports spoiled or unattractive food and beverage, defective supplies and equipment or other unusual conditions.
  • Maintains and establishes workflow, departmental policies, procedures, objections, quality assurance programs and health and safety standards as it pertains to the diet office.
  • Trains new clerical support operators on taking patient diet requests.
  • Educates diet office employees on therapeutic diets.
  • Communicates information passed down from the Patient Services Manager to the diet office staff.
  • Directs activities of one or more diet clerks who assist in taking patient meal orders.
  • Functions as a team player in the department, knowing when to ask for assistance as needed and being willing to assist others when requested.
  • Initiates telephone or personal contact as appropriate to ensure all patients receive a meal for each meal period during scheduled shift.
  • Answers phones in a professional manner following department phone etiquette procedures.
  • Maintains departmental records, logs, files.
  • Maintains clean, organized office.
  • Oversees inventory and ordering of office supplies and patient menus.
  • Accurately tracks clinical activity data into department forms.
  • Provides assistance with tray assembly and delivery as needed.
  • Uses Computer systems to perform diet office functions and clinical activities.
  • Prior to each meal service and throughout shift, updates patient information and diet orders in computer system that are received via computer, phone or FAX.
  • Clarifies incomplete or ambiguous diet order and ensures accurate meal orders according to policy.
  • Makes necessary diet changes, process correct diet orders for all patients and keep Room Service order system updated.
  • Processes Room Service customer meal orders accurately and according to patient preferences and dietary restrictions.
  • Updates and processes Room Service customer nourishments/supplements, snacks and tube feeding orders accurately and according to patient preferences and dietary restrictions.
  • Prints nourishment, supplement and tube feeding labels according to established time frames.
  • Prepares and delivers nourishment, supplement, and tube feeding product according to standard procedures.
  • Prints patient reports to determine which patients have not placed a meal order for the meal period.
  • Processes AD-13 requests for patient and/or guest meal service.
  • Enhances nutrition knowledge and professional growth and development through participation in meetings, in-services and literature review.
  • Actively participates in routine hospital, departmental and staff meetings/in-services, and professional meetings/in-services as assigned.
  • Actively supports and participates in Performance Improvement activities, including but not limited to tray assessments, meal rounds and hospital/department committees.
  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient’s care.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors.

Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Care Unit Opens

Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Care Unit opens. December 12, 2025. Denver Health unveiled Colorado's first Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Care Unit (IMAP), a 12-bed inpatient unit that treats adult patients with active medical and active psychiatric conditions that require hospitalization at the same time. Opening the IMAP Care Unit was made possible thanks to Denver voters passing 2024 ballot measure 2Q to provide sustainable sales tax funding for Denver Health. This funding enabled Denver Health to renovate a former inpatient psychiatric unit that was closed due to a lack of funding. Now, IMAP offers an innovative model of care that less than 3% of health systems provide nationwide. "Denver residents placed their trust in us when they approved 2Q, and the IMAP is a direct result of that support," said Donna Lynne, CEO of Denver Health. "Our community needs more access to behavioral health care, and we're delivering on our promise to meet the needs of our community with innovative, high-quality care." In the IMAP Care Unit, patients receive specialized, efficient care that meets their physical and mental health needs at the same time. IMAP offers medical and psychiatric services all in one unit, including intensive psychotherapy, occupational and physical therapy, medication management, withdrawal stabilization and more from an interdisciplinary team of medical and psychiatric providers. "As a dually trained medical and psychiatric provider, I've seen so many patients who would have benefitted from the integrated care IMAP provides," said Bobbie Jo Dodson, DO, program director of the Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Care Unit. "Opening this unit fulfills a career-long dream of mine because it ensures patients with complex medical and psychiatric needs are met with the timely, high-quality care they deserve." Denver Health is the largest behavioral health provider in the city and county of Denver, serving 126,000 patients last year with services including psychiatric emergency care, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health treatment, and a variety of addiction services. IMAP adds to this extensive list of specialized services Denver Health offers to the community. "I always try to remind people that the brain is a part of the body and that every medical diagnosis is a behavioral health issue," Christian Thurstone, MD, chair of behavioral health at Denver Health, said. "The IMAP is the embodiment of these ideas and Denver Health is the perfect place to offer this kind of resource to the community.
