Broadcom's undervalued AI chip business could deliver 149% gains as revenue set to hit $230B by 2028

Broadcom reported an 86% year-over-year revenue increase to $29.6 billion in its fiscal 2026 third quarter, driven by strong demand for AI chips and networking components. The company's AI chip revenue surged 221% to $16.7 billion. Despite these results, Broadcom's stock has underperformed the semiconductor sector, remaining flat over the past year whilst the PHLX Semiconductor Sector index gained 97%. Wall Street expected slightly higher fourth-quarter revenue guidance than the $34.8 billion Broadcom projected. The company anticipates AI revenue will reach $57.6 billion in fiscal 2026, up 186% from the previous year. Management projects this will double to $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and reach $230 billion by fiscal 2028. Broadcom currently trades at 20 times forward earnings. Analysts expect the company's earnings per share to grow from $11.64 in fiscal 2026 to over $30 by fiscal 2028.

Broadcom vs Micron: AI chip rivalry sees custom accelerators trump memory in 2026

Broadcom and Micron Technology are both capitalising on AI-driven demand, but offer different investment profiles. Broadcom provides diverse semiconductor and software solutions, whilst Micron specialises in memory and storage technologies. Broadcom reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $63.9 billion, up 23.9% year-over-year, with net income of $23.1 billion. The company has secured major agreements including a $200 billion memorandum of understanding with Samsung and a $30 billion chip commitment from Apple. Micron achieved fiscal 2025 revenue of $37.4 billion, a 48.9% increase, with net income of $8.5 billion. The memory specialist focuses heavily on data centres, which account for approximately 50% of total revenue. Both companies face customer concentration risks. Broadcom's top five customers represent around 40% of net revenue, whilst Micron derives over half its revenue from its top ten clients. Analysts favour Broadcom for its diversified portfolio and custom AI accelerator business, despite Micron's lower valuation metrics.

Broadcom emerges as Nvidia's top AI chip rival with $230B revenue target by 2028

Broadcom is emerging as Nvidia's primary competitor in AI computing through custom chip development, according to market analysis. The company partners with major tech firms including Alphabet, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Anthropic to design specialised AI hardware optimised for specific workloads. Broadcom's AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion in its fiscal third quarter ended 2 August, surging 221% year over year. The company projects this revenue will double to $115 billion in 2027 and reach $230 billion by 2028. By contrast, AMD's data centre division generated $6.7 billion with 107% growth, whilst Nvidia's grew 117% to $89 billion. Custom AI chips offer cost advantages over general-purpose GPUs for dedicated workloads, positioning Broadcom to capture significant market share as hyperscalers optimise their computing infrastructure.

AMD and Broadcom beat estimates, but Wall Street misses AI infrastructure boom's long-term potential

Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom shares have been volatile recently, despite both companies reporting quarterly sales and earnings that exceeded analysts' estimates. The market volatility stems from investors struggling to grasp the scale and long-term potential of the current artificial intelligence infrastructure boom. AMD's second-quarter 2026 data centre revenue rose 107% to $6.7 billion, driving total sales up 50% to $11.5 billion. Non-GAAP earnings increased 245% to $1.66 per share. Despite these results, shares fell post-earnings. CEO Lisa Su highlighted a significant shift in data centre architecture. The ratio of GPUs to CPUs in servers is moving from 4:1 or 8:1 towards 1:1 as AI agents require more CPU processing power. AMD management estimates this creates a $220 billion total addressable market by 2030.
