Diverse tech teams start with diverse VCs and intentional hiring from day one

Leah Solivan, founder of Taskrabbit and managing director of Precedent.VC, says building diverse teams requires intentional action from the earliest hires. Speaking on TechCrunch's Build Mode podcast, she explained that diversity must be embedded in recruiting and hiring processes from day one, as it becomes increasingly difficult to implement later. Solivan argues that a more diverse tech industry begins with investors, as venture capitalists' biases influence which founders receive funding. She recommends concrete practices including reviewing two female CVs for every male CV, tapping wider networks, and promoting people from different backgrounds into leadership roles. As an early-stage investor, Solivan notes that founders don't need to be from underrepresented groups themselves to prioritise diverse hiring, emphasising that deliberate strategies can overcome default recruitment patterns.

Taskrabbit revenue up 5x in 5 years as CEO bets on AI driving workers to trade jobs

Taskrabbit CEO Ania Smith expects AI to boost the gig work platform as automation pushes more workers towards trade jobs that are harder to replace with technology. The company's revenue has grown fivefold over the past five years. Founded in 2008, Taskrabbit connects gig workers with customers needing services like furniture assembly, plumbing and electrical work. The platform lists approximately 175,000 workers and was acquired by IKEA in 2017, which now accounts for nearly a quarter of its global business. The company is using AI to improve its marketplace operations, including reading customer requests and matching them with appropriate workers more efficiently. Smith sees "infinite room for growth" as trade jobs remain resistant to automation whilst white-collar positions face cuts.

HBO Max Bows Social Media Series 'Squire for Hire' Inspired by 'Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'

HBO Max has announced the launch of "Squire for Hire," a talent-led social content series inspired by the new HBO original drama series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." The digital campaign is designed to "bring the spirit of Westeros to life," according to HBO, along with a fan sweepstakes that offers a unique way for audiences to feel as if they're part of the story. The "Squire for Hire" launch begins with a series of short-form, character-driven videos released across social channels. Each video pairs a celebrity with an actor portraying a comedic Westeros-inspired squire from the series as they arrive at their celebrity "Knight's" doorstep and attempt to assist them with simple tasks. However, the squires' medieval approach, true to the essence of the HBO original series, transforms ordinary requests into comedic misadventures. The first installment of the one-day rollout across "Game of Thrones" global Instagram handles and celebrity personal accounts debuts with Noah Beck, whose video kicks off the campaign with irreverent comedy as his squire attempts to navigate household tasks. Additional creator collaborations debuting one hour apart later Jan. 29, include video installments from Marshawn Lynch followed by The Chainsmokers. Following the rollout of the social series, HBO Max has teamed up with home services platform Taskrabbit. Playing off the idea that Taskers are like trusted squires, Taskrabbit will launch a dedicated campaign hub at SquireForHire.com, offering fans the chance to enter the official sweepstakes to win help from a squire of their own. One grand prize winner based in Los Angeles will receive a special in-home visit from the same squire featured in the talent-driven social series. To ensure tasks are completed to the modern-day standard, Taskrabbit will also provide the winner with a complimentary Tasker as part of the experience. "Through standout celebrity collaborations and a first-of-its-kind Taskrabbit sweepstakes, 'Squire for Hire' invites fans to experience 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' in ways that reflect the series itself, unexpected, character-driven, and genuinely funny," Mark Doumet, VP, HBO and Max originals marketing, said in a statement. "It's a playful reintroduction to Westeros that signals this new style of adaptation, one that embraces wit and heart alongside the epic." The first two episodes of the HBO original series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" are now streaming on HBO Max.
