Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience as a recipient of services for people with psychiatric conditions and substantial personal recovery experience is required.
  • One year of experience working with youth and young adults experiencing co-occurring disorders and psychiatric conditions is required.
  • Must be able to become CPR and First Aid certified within two weeks of employment.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or successfully complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring Training within six months of hire, and become a Certified Peer Specialist within one year of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a CORI, reference, and driving record check.
  • A valid United States driver's license is required; incumbents must be at least 21 years of age, have maintained a valid license for at least six months, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • Must maintain a safe driving record subject to annual checks.
  • If using a personal vehicle, must possess and maintain adequate insurance.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques or a two-person lift, and assist clients with activities of daily living.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and office equipment, communicate with clients and staff, and meet the stated vision and mobility requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health child, youth, family, and adult service systems.
  • Ability to assist youth and young adults in service planning, use mediation and conflict-resolution skills, apply evidence-based approaches, maintain confidentiality, use advocacy and crisis-intervention techniques, make independent judgments, balance competing priorities, and work independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of person-centered, strengths-based, recovery-oriented values and modalities; peer-support practices and ethical standards; engagement and participatory planning techniques; community resources; and the legal, civil, and human rights of youth and young adults.
Responsibilities
  • Work with youth and young adults to enhance self-direction and empowerment.
  • Provide individual peer mentoring, non-directive support, coaching, and modeling to improve engagement in services and access to resources.
  • Carry a caseload of approximately 5 to 10 youth and young adults for individual peer mentoring.
  • Provide core staffing for the Access Center and engage youth and young adults during drop-in hours.
  • Staff Access Center activities and events and support full participation by youth and young adults.
  • Welcome youth and young adults, provide peer support, and orient them to available services.
  • Facilitate regular peer-support groups on topics relevant to youth and young adults.
  • Assist with recruiting and supporting the Young Adult Leadership Council.
  • Plan events and training opportunities for staff, youth and young adults, and the broader community based on identified needs.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing by contacting community stakeholders, creating and distributing marketing materials, and educating people about the program and services.
  • Attend community events to engage youth and young adults and explain available benefits and supports.
  • Assist Access Center leadership, clinicians, and facilitators in identifying and accessing services and providers.
  • Help youth and young adults develop supportive relationships, community connections, life skills, self-advocacy skills, and positive employment behaviors.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and wellness practices, including addressing substance use.
  • Help youth and young adults identify and integrate goals relating to education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation into service planning.
  • Support youth and young adults in communicating and working effectively with service providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Use personal lived experience in a purposeful, strengths-based way to promote discovery, recovery, hope, and future focus.
  • Use motivational interviewing, harm reduction, Wellness Recovery Action Plan methods, and other trained evidence-informed or best-practice models.
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies and provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Serve as a bridge between child- and young-adult-serving mental-health systems.
  • Support youth and young adults' choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in planning, delivering, and evaluating services.
  • Attend in-service training and staff meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.

  • A bachelor's degree in a human services discipline is preferred.
  • Access to an operational and insured vehicle and willingness to use it to transport youth and young adults is preferred.
