Requirements
  • No professional nursing experience is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • Registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or higher must enroll in an appropriate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within two years of starting and complete it within five years.
  • Nurses hired with a valid compact license must obtain a North Carolina nursing license within 90 days of their start date.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Knowledge of the scope of practice of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing care assistants.
  • Knowledge and appropriate application of the nursing process.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and procedures.
  • Ability to assess the nursing needs of acutely and chronically ill patients and their families.
  • Ability to seek out resources independently and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators, and leaders.
  • Ability to teach patients and families according to the nursing plan of care.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide professional nursing care in accordance with the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Assist other nursing personnel in delivering nursing care.
  • Assist in developing and implementing general policies and procedures.
  • Provide direction and guidance regarding the proper use, care, and control of assigned material resources in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Collect and analyze patient data, develop and implement nursing care plans, establish interpersonal relationships with patients, evaluate nursing care, and communicate relevant patient facts and actions to appropriate personnel.
  • Act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit.
  • Appraise the quality and effectiveness of materials and equipment and report results to the head nurse.
  • Maintain cleanliness standards in assigned areas.
  • Observe nursing-staff activities and recommend improvements to nursing management regarding the quality and effectiveness of nursing care and operational efficiency.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the work described.
