Club retailers gain market share with grocery focus and value pricing

Club retailers are leveraging competitive pricing and expanded grocery offerings to boost sales and gain market share from traditional grocers. BJ's Wholesale Club, Sam's Club and Costco recently reported strong performance in their grocery divisions. BJ's comparable sales in perishables, grocery and sundries grew 2.3% in the fourth quarter, driven by fresh departments, beverages and snacks. The gains followed the retailer's Fresh 2.0 initiative overhaul of produce, meat and seafood sections. Sam's Club saw mid-single-digit comparable sales growth in both fresh and grocery categories during its most recent quarter. Costco reported fresh comparable sales rising in the low double digits, led by meat and bakery, whilst food and sundries grew mid-single digits. Costco has increased its grocery market share from 7% in 2020-2021 to 8.4% in 2024-2025, according to Numerator data.

BJ's plans big move into lecanto.

BJ's plans big move into lecanto. * MICHAEL D. BATES Chronicle Reporter * 3 hrs ago A new big-box retailer could soon join the rapidly growing commercial corridor along County Road 486. BJ's Wholesale Club has requested a building permit for a store planned as part of the second wave of restaurants and retailers at Shoppes at Black Diamond. The membership warehouse retailer has been eyeing the area since the intersection of County Roads 486 and 491 began booming with commercial development two years ago. According to plans submitted to the county, the store would measure about 106,000 square feet. Joe Cappuccilli, broker with Gulf-to-Lakes Real Estate Inc., said the store will sit on a parcel just west of the Planet Fitness and Sprouts Farmers Market currently under construction, on the north side of County Road 486. The project also calls for one of the chain's gas stations. Cappuccilli said the warehouse club should be a natural fit for the area. "It's really the continuation of the demand for commercial along that corridor," Cappuccilli said. "This is kind of the next piece of the puzzle." Cappuccilli said the developer is also negotiating with several potential tenants for additional outparcels along County Road 486. "Obviously, a lot of other national users have become interested in the area due to the developer getting a warehouse club for this market," he said. Founded in 1984 in Massachusetts, BJ's operates warehouse-style stores where customers pay an annual membership fee to shop. The stores offer a wide range of goods - from bulk groceries and fresh foods to electronics, clothing and home goods - typically at discounted prices. The chain promotes savings of up to about 25% compared with traditional grocery stores, a hallmark of the warehouse-club model. According to its website, the company operates 261 clubs and 198 gas stations in 21 states. BJ's competes primarily with Costco Wholesale and Sam's Club. One distinction: BJ's allows shoppers to use manufacturer coupons in addition to its own discounts. The company also sells private-label brands including Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen. Other retailers expected in the second phase of the Shoppes at Black Diamond include Ulta Beauty, Five Below, America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, Dollar Tree and Chase Bank. Michael D. BJ's Wholesale Club misses 2026 EPS guidance by 3.4% despite Q4 beat

BJ's Wholesale Club reported fourth-quarter revenue of $5.58 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $0.96, beating analyst estimates, but shares fell as the company issued weak guidance for financial year 2026. Adjusted EPS guidance of $4.50 at the midpoint missed analyst estimates by 3.4%. CEO Robert Eddy cited strong membership gains and traffic growth, whilst acknowledging margin pressure from merchandise mix shifts and winter storm disruptions. Same-store sales rose 1.6% year on year, down from 4% in the prior-year quarter. During the earnings call, management addressed expansion plans, noting strong early results in Texas, and discussed shifts from free trials to discounted memberships with auto-renewal. The company emphasised continued investments in digital fulfilment and pricing to drive long-term member value.

BJ's Wholesale doubles down on bold strategy as sales lag behind Costco and Sam's Club

BJ's Wholesale has raised $120 million in a Series C round, valuing the company at $1.45 billion, as it seeks to attract more shoppers amid heightened competition from Costco and Sam's Club. The warehouse club reported fourth-quarter 2025 comparable sales growth of 2.6% year-over-year, excluding petrol, lagging behind Costco's 5.9% and Sam's Club's 4% during the same period. Operating income declined 0.2%. CEO Bob Eddy cited cautious consumer behaviour and tariff uncertainties affecting performance. Whilst grocery, perishables, electronics and apparel sales increased, home and seasonal categories declined. BJ's is doubling down on value-focused strategies as approximately one in four US consumers reported feeling worse off financially, with many cutting spending on travel, restaurants and entertainment.
