Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program are required.
  • Registration or certification as a Medical Assistant is required.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule-based instructions.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of the current practice management system, electronic medical record, Microsoft Word, text paging, Internet, and Intranet.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care.
  • Skill in taking vital signs and maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Ability to work with geriatric patients and patients in lower socioeconomic sectors of the community.
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, and hear frequently; occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Assist patients by answering routine questions, resolving minor difficulties, and giving directions as authorized by the Provider.
  • Document patient communications and Provider-directed instructions in patient charts.
  • Provide patients and families with education and support as directed by the Provider.
  • Support patients with basic self-management goal setting using active listening and behavior modification principles.
  • Make appointments as needed and directed by the Provider.
  • Assist with routine office examinations and procedures, including administering injections, medications, vaccinations, and blood draws as directed by the Provider.
  • Document procedures, patient interactions, laboratory results, and diagnostic test results in patient charts.
  • Communicate test results and orders to patients as directed by the Provider.
  • Serve as a liaison to pharmacies regarding new and refill prescriptions and follow up with patients as needed.
  • Participate in patient and practice-level meetings.
  • Contact patients by phone or letter to remind them about preventive or chronic care steps.
  • Prepare, clean, and sterilize equipment and examination rooms according to safety and clinical protocols.
  • Handle and dispose of infectious and hazardous waste according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
  • Inventory and request supplies.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, including meetings, Plan-Do-Study-Act activities, pilots, data collection, and evaluation of practice or location performance metrics.
  • Participate in scheduled pre-visit planning and huddle processes.
  • Facilitate coordination of care following hospital or emergency-room utilization and follow-up from specialty providers.
  • Participate in team meetings and quality improvement activities as necessary.
