Requirements
  • A track record of building and leading engineering teams, including at least one company that shipped physical products.
  • Demonstrated ownership of systems architecture across hardware, firmware, cloud, and software, with design decisions that hold up as a product scales.
  • A history of shaping what gets built based on real customer and deployment constraints.
  • Experience taking hardware from working prototype to a reliable, deployed product at scale.
  • Breadth across sensing hardware, firmware and embedded electronics, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, and user-facing software.
  • Experience with systems that include hardware and software, including production-level software experience and a working sense of user experience.
  • Strong hiring instincts and a history of building teams and culture from a small base.
  • Technical leadership across disciplines, including collaboration with scientists, machine learning engineers, operations, and a founder CEO.
  • Comfort setting direction in a small company with limited process scaffolding and establishing lightweight systems that scale with the company.
  • Experience with field-deployed or Internet of Things products where reliability, connectivity, and environmental robustness matter.
  • Ability to communicate directly and constructively and improve team performance through that communication.
Responsibilities
  • Own the system architecture and determine how sensing hardware, firmware, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, and software fit together as a coherent system.
  • Set the technical direction for the sensing platform across hardware, firmware, software, and field deployment.
  • Apply product thinking to engineering by understanding field deployments and customer needs and shaping the scope and sequencing of technical development.
  • Build the engineering team by hiring strong engineers, developing existing engineers, and shaping team structure and culture.
  • Lead the transition from working prototypes to reliable, manufacturable, field-deployed products on both the software and hardware sides.
  • Establish repeatable engineering practices covering documentation, design review, validation, release, and field support.
  • Partner with science and artificial intelligence teams so the hardware improves the data used to train models.
  • Own engineering delivery against milestones supporting commercial deployments.
  • Remain close to both hardware and software work to make credible architectural decisions and earn the trust of staff-level engineers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Plant science, agriculture, biosensing, electrophysiology, or other low-signal sensing experience in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Experience at a deep-tech or hardware-software company, including physical artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, robotics, climate, or life sciences.
  • Experience building the first engineering practices and team at a seed-stage company.
  • Experience with low-power Internet of Things stacks, digital signal processing or signal processing, or outdoor and agricultural products.

The Electric Plant Company

View

The Electric Plant Company turns signals from living plants into actionable environmental data using a low-cost bioware dongle that attaches to a plant and streams electrochemical data to the cloud. Its Large Plant Model analyzes these signals in real time to produce insights and recommendations for monitoring groundwater chemicals, fire risk, and carbon-related metrics. The approach combines hardware and specialized AI to interpret plant electrophysiology, and it focuses on co-building solutions with partners to scale a global sensor network of cloud-connected plants. The goal is to illuminate ecosystem health and environmental risk, support climate-resilient urban design, and advance sustainable landscaping and stewardship.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The company closed an $11.2 million seed round in November 2025.
  • Hiring for deployment and electrical engineering signals active commercialization and product momentum.
  • A San Francisco headquarters and Detroit roots broaden access to talent and customers.

What critics are saying

  • First commercial deployment starts August 2026, so product-market fit remains unproven.
  • Seed-backed hardware plus field deployment raises burn risk before repeatable revenue arrives.
  • Competing sensors and remote-sensing tools can undercut expensive plant-specific instrumentation fast.

What makes The Electric Plant Company unique

  • Justin Mast and Lee von Kraus combine horticulture and biosignal-interface expertise.
  • Electric Plant pairs plant-signal hardware with a proprietary foundation model for real-time insights.
  • Their forward-deployed model targets plant care, urban landscaping, and environmental sensing together.
