Lead Facilities Engineer

Job Description

Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital is seeking a candidate with 7 years of relevant building maintenance and repair experience, including high pressure steam boilers and refrigeration/electrical/automation systems.

The Lead Facilities Engineer reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

To lead and supervise the daily performance of staff engineers. Performs preventative maintenance and urgent, corrective, and routine repairs in electrical, mechanical and HVAC equipment. Assists Chief Engineer in matters of performance reviews and discipline. Lead Engineer shall assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining an effective organization, administering monetary controls, budget development,

planning, training of personnel in their general and specific duties, safety, and effective management. Supervises staff engineers in the Engineering Department.

• Oversees and operate power plant equipment in a manner to minimize risk of the loss of any utilities necessary for the provision of health care in the hospital.
• In the event of an unexpected failure of any utility, item or equipment in the power plant, identifies the cause of the failure and take necessary action to maintain continuity of utilities service to the hospital.
• Oversees and operates a wide variety of power plant equipment to include boilers, chilled water air conditioning equipment, pumps, air compressors and diesel-electric generators for the provision of utilities necessary for hospital operations.
• Maintains proper water quality for boiler water, condensate, water softeners, and cooling towers to ensure that water is within proper limits to prevent damage to power plant equipment.
• Maintains all power plant equipment in accordance with issued Preventive Maintenance Orders and manufacturer's recommended procedures, to minimize interruptions of utilities to the hospital.
• Maintains the power plant building and all equipment in first-class condition which promotes a clean and safe work environment which prevents personal injury and equipment damage.
• Maintains power plant spaces in a clean, organized, and hazard free condition at all times by ensuring floors are swept and kept free of water, oil, or other fluids, and performs other floor/plant maintenance duties as assigned by plant Chief Engineer.
• Cleans, paints and preserves assigned areas and equipment as directed by the power plant supervisor, ensuring the plant is kept in a clean and hazard-free condition.
• Assumes property accountability of power plant tools and equipment during shift operations to preclude loss of assets of the hospital.
• Keeps personal work spaces and equipment in a safe and orderly condition to ensure personal safety, prevent injury, and checks safety equipment to insure availability and good condition as assigned by the plant supervisor.
• Provides monitoring, coaching, and evaluation of team members' performance, especially in the areas of productivity and quality management.
• Serves as a positive role model for team members by working with them to promote teamwork and cooperation both within the department and across departments.
• Assists with coordinating services, prioritizing assignments and workflow, and promoting situational decision making/ problem solving.
• Performs responsibilities of a Facilities Engineer. Takes responsibility for, or provides guidance to team members on, the handling of complex or novel issues. 
• Assumes full responsibility for plant operations during evening, night weekend/holiday shifts, and briefs the relief operators on all significant events plant procedures and guidelines.
• Oversees and coordinates with other shop personnel to obtain assistance and information of utilities supported by the Power Plant.
• Initiates emergency notification procedures Engineering Department contingency plans, policies or procedures.
• Maintains and annotates power plant logs required by departmental and power plant policies/procedures and logs accurately reflects plan operating conditions at all times.
• Maintains necessary logs of water analyses and chemical additives in accordance with power plant directives, policies or procedures, and keeps power plant supervisor informed of abnormal conditions.
• Completes and returns all work orders/PM orders to the power plant supervisor upon completion of the task ensuring that the work is accomplished on or prior to the procedure due date.
• Completes assigned duties and all shift responsibilities, plant policies and procedures prior to turning over shift, evidenced through plant logs, equipment printouts and Chief Engineer's observation.
• Wears appropriate safety equipment and comply with departmental and OSHA safety standards at all times.
• Follows hospital infection control/universal precautions at all times.
• Interprets plant and energy management system readings to determine if equipment is operating properly and anticipates potential problems with equipment and systems, evidenced by plant logs and equipment printouts.
• Completes documentation of repair work on power plant equipment and submit to the power plant Chief Engineer upon completion of the repair.
• Adheres to departmental and governmental safety standards and organizational and departmental personal appearance policies.

Qualifications

Required:

• 7 years of relevant building maintenance and repair experience, including high pressure steam boilers and refrigeration/electrical/automation systems
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid state driver's license with acceptable driving record and auto insurance; Licensed as a Stationary Engineer (SE) or equivalent required.
• Level 3 EPA Refrigeration certification required.
  • LIC DRIVE, LIC SE
• Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Preferred:

• 5 years of clinical lab experience in a TJC or CAP accredited laboratory in the section they are to supervise.

Exception: New graduate internal employees seeking their first licensed clinical position at NM may be eligible depending upon the job family. 

Compensation: 40.47 to 54.63 (USD) (HOURLY)
