Meta Sues Hong Kong Firm In Crackdown On Ai Deepfake Nude Apps

👩‍🍳 How we use AI at Tech in Asia, thoughtfully and responsibly.🧔‍♂️ A friendly human may check it before it goes live. More news hereMeta has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline, a Hong Kong-based company, for promoting generative AI apps that digitally “undress” individuals without consent on its platforms. The apps, known as CrushAI nudify tools, were advertised through Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. The lawsuit follows a CBS News investigation that found numerous ads for these apps on Meta’s platforms.Meta reported that it has removed many flagged ads, deleted related accounts, and blocked URLs associated with the apps. The company claims that Joy Timeline attempted to evade Meta’s ad review processes. The CBS report indicated that these ads primarily targeted men aged 18 to 65 in the US, UK, and EU. Such apps often breach platform safety policies and are linked to increasing incidents of blackmail, sextortion, and misuse by minors.🔗 Source: The Verge🧠 Food for thought1️⃣ The legal response to AI exploitation is rapidly evolving but still catching upMeta’s lawsuit against Joy Timeline represents just one front in the growing legal battle against AI misuse, particularly around non-consensual intimate imagery.San Francisco launched its own lawsuit against 16 AI “undressing” websites in August 2024, showing how local governments are stepping in where federal regulation lags 1.These legal actions highlight the challenge of addressing harmful AI applications through traditional legal frameworks, which weren’t designed for today’s generative technologies.Legislators are working to close these gaps with bills like H.R.1736, which specifically addresses generative AI threats and seeks to establish clearer legal accountability for AI misuse 2.The legal system’s response to AI exploitation reflects a reactive rather than proactive approach, with lawsuits typically following after harmful applications have already reached consumers and caused damage.2️⃣ Meta faces a paradoxical challenge in its AI advertising ecosystemWhile Meta is suing to block harmful AI apps from advertising on its platforms, the company is simultaneously pushing to fully automate its own ad creation using AI by 2026 3.Meta’s Advantage+ suite of AI tools automates audience selection, creative enhancement, and budget management for advertisers, creating efficiency but potentially making oversight more difficult 4.This automation push raises questions about Meta’s ability to effectively monitor content when its own systems are designed to reduce human involvement in the advertising process. The company’s AI tools aim to make advertising more accessible for small businesses by lowering costs, but this democratization of ad creation also creates more entry points for potentially harmful content 4.Meta’s dual role as both a platform for AI-generated content and a creator of AI tools creates inherent tensions in its content moderation approach, as evidenced by CBS’s discovery of harmful ads persisting even after initial removal efforts 1.3️⃣ AI “nudify” apps represent a broader crisis of consent in the AI eraThe proliferation of apps that digitally “undress” people without consent reflects a fundamental challenge to privacy in the age of generative AI technologies. These tools are driving an increase in blackmail and “sextortion” schemes, demonstrating how AI can amplify existing forms of online harassment and abuse 1.Privacy experts have identified lack of meaningful consent as a critical concern with generative AI systems, which often collect and process personal data without individuals’ knowledge or permission 5.Stanford researchers advocate for shifting from opt-out to opt-in data collection practices to enhance user control over personal information, which would directly address issues like non-consensual image manipulation 5.The targeting of these apps primarily to men aged 18-65, as revealed in the CBS investigation, points to gender-based exploitation that mirrors broader patterns of technology being weaponized against women and marginalized groups 1

Word-Of-Mouth Commerce Is The Next Evolution Of Influencer Marketing

Aspire.io drives word-of-mouth commerce at scale for 900+ global giants and high-growth DTC brands, cutting through the noise of traditional paths to purchase.SAN FRANCISCO, March 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Fighting rising acquisition costs, the sunsetting of third-party cookies, and the dwindling returns of once highly-profitable advertising channels, marketing leaders are shifting their channel mix towards a source of unmatched returns: letting consumers themselves (and people they trust) do the selling. Aspire.io, the world's leading word-of-mouth commerce company, has built a powerhouse platform and industry-leading Agency to drive revenue in the way commerce began - trusted, word-of-mouth recommendations through ambassadors, influencers, affiliates, customers, user-generated content, and social ads to drive efficiency across paid, owned, and earned."With rising ad costs and the loss of cookie tracking, the best brands are going back to the basics, tapping into their communities to drive sustainable growth," said Anand Kishore, CEO at Aspire. "Word-of-mouth used to be associated with unpaid, unscalable growth, but today is highly scalable, profitable, and efficient."Traditional, brand-produced content is no longer effective, especially with younger Gen Z audiences who crave authenticity, realness, and low-fidelity content. Consumers want product recommendations from trusted, familiar faces and peers with 69% of buyers trusting influencer recommendations. Plus, marketing channels such as email and websites are losing the consumers' attention to social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram - which are now search, content, and point-of-purchase powerhouses. The distance between inspiration and transaction is shorter than ever, and Aspire operationalizes word-of-mouth marketing at the largest scale and on the biggest stage - social media platforms.92% of consumers trust recommendations over a company's messaging and 73% of online shoppers agreed that user-generated content made them more confident when purchasing
