Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, control systems engineering, automation engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 8 years of industry experience working on controls and data acquisition, excluding internships, co-ops, and school projects, is required.
  • At least 3 years of experience with programmable logic controller programming, including ladder logic and structured text, is required; Siemens experience is preferred.
  • Advanced experience with instrumentation for voltage, amperage, temperature, pressure, level, weight, and flow is required.
  • Strong knowledge of high- and low-voltage electrical design, electrical troubleshooting, and industrial power distribution is required.
  • Proficiency with industrial automation communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet, and RS485 is required.
  • High-level programming experience in C, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, or an equivalent language is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of industrial control system design principles, instrumentation specification, P&IDs, and ISA/IEC standards is required.
  • Experience implementing LOTO procedures, arc-flash boundaries, electrical safe-work practices, and other industrial electrical safety programs is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain electrical, instrumentation, and control systems for iron-production processes from concept through detailed design, fabrication, commissioning, and handover.
  • Own the full lifecycle of control system design, including P&IDs, I/O lists, control narratives, instrumentation specifications, electrical schematics, panel layouts, and network architectures.
  • Ensure control systems are efficient, reliable, safe, compliant with applicable codes and standards such as NEC, ISA, and IEC, and aligned with site EHS requirements.
  • Collaborate with process engineering, mechanical systems, operations, and research and development teams to define system requirements and control strategies.
  • Lead integration efforts for new and existing equipment, including PLC, HMI, and SCADA system architecture and control strategies.
  • Oversee and perform installation, configuration, commissioning, and site acceptance testing of control systems.
  • Conduct system testing, tuning, loop checks, and validation to ensure optimal and stable process performance.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization, advanced control, alarm management, and system reliability improvements.
  • Program and troubleshoot Siemens S7 PLCs using TIA Portal, Ignition HMI and SCADA, and associated communication networks.
  • Develop, maintain, and review electrical design packages in SolidWorks Electrical, including control panel designs, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials.
  • Specify and source instrumentation and electrical equipment, including sensors, transmitters, motors, drives, and MCC components, to meet process and project requirements.
  • Autonomously lead engineering projects or small multidisciplinary teams, including scheduling, budgeting, technical decision-making, and vendor management.
  • Troubleshoot complex electromechanical systems, perform root cause analysis, and execute corrective and preventive actions.
  • Apply FMEA, PHA, and HAZOP safety analysis methodologies to manage risks.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including control narratives, cause-and-effect matrices, test plans, operating procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Comply with workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices, and company policies and procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Siemens S7 using TIA Portal, Ignition, SolidWorks Electrical, and SQL databases is preferred.
  • Experience in chemical processing, industrial manufacturing, pilot-plant operations, or continuous or batch process industries is preferred.
  • Experience with control panel design per UL 508A, hazardous-area classification, and instrument selection for chemical environments is preferred.

Electra Earth develops a green-steel production method that uses electrochemical refinement to turn iron ore into steel at much lower temperatures than traditional methods. The process lowers heat from about 1,600°C to around 60°C and relies on intermittent renewable energy rather than coal, enabling on-demand production and the use of low-grade ores that are usually treated as waste. The result is ironmaking with zero carbon emissions. The company’s hardware and operations are designed to be flexible, so production can start or stop as needed, and energy costs are reduced by using inexpensive renewable electricity and lower capital and operating expenses. Electra Earth is also exploring co-extraction of green earth minerals from iron-containing ore bodies and waste streams, creating potential additional revenue streams."

Published March 13, 2026 Dive brief: * Clean iron startup Electra announced Tuesday it has secured $30 million in new capital through a venture debt facility provided by JPMorgan. * The new funding will help Electra accelerate progress toward its first commercial facility and grow its overall business, according to a March 10 release. The company aims to reach commercial scale by the end of 2030. * "This funding gets us one step closer to bringing Electra's clean iron to market," Electra's Chief Financial Officer James Rutland said in the release. "JPMorgan's financing demonstrates confidence in our business, technology and growth prospects. As a team, we're strongly positioned to scale and meet the growing demand for Electra's clean iron." Dive insight: JPMorgan's financing comes after Electra completed a series of successful funding rounds and secured investments last year. In October, Electra secured a $50 million grant from the Bill Gates-backed Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Prior to this, Electra received an $8 million Colorado clean industry tax credit in May and closed a $186 million funding round in April, led by sustainable investment firm Capricorn Investment Group and Singapore-based investment firm Temasek. The green ironmaker also unveiled a 130,000 square foot demonstration facility in Jefferson County, Colorado, in October that it said would be supported by the Breakthrough Energy Ventures grant. The facility is expected to be operational later this year and will be able to produce up to 500 tons of low-carbon iron using the company's technology annually. At the same time, Electra announced it had secured advance purchase agreements for its iron product from U.S. steelmaker Nucor and steel trader Toyota Tsusho and signed its first environmental attribute credit agreement with Meta. The startup, founded in 2020, uses a low-temperature process that dissolves iron ore in an acidic solution before running electricity through the solution, according to the company's website. The low-temperature method allows its technology to be compatible with intermittent renewable energy resources, like wind and solar, and used in electric arc furnaces. JPMorgan Commercial Banking Head of Climate Tech Robert Keepers said in the release that Electra's clean iron technology is well positioned for commercialization, and the bank looks forward to "working with Electra as they continue to scale their business and help accelerate the adoption of clean materials."
