Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Maintain a valid Engineer Certification under 49 CFR Part 240.
  • Have three years of safe, increasingly responsible railroad experience as a certified locomotive engineer; passenger rail operations is preferable.
  • Possess the knowledge and ability to pass the required initial and annual examinations, through any combination of education and experience.
  • Have no railroad operating rule violations or positive drug and alcohol test results within the past five years.
  • Operate diesel locomotives and passenger control cars.
  • Successfully complete all required initial and ongoing training.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with others and initiate and respond to oral and written communication.
  • Successfully complete CPR, AED, and First Aid certification training and administer these procedures while on duty.
  • Pass the required pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and required endorsements.
  • Pass the pre-employment Department of Transportation physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen.
  • Successfully complete and maintain required annual safety certification and testing.
  • Walk on uneven surfaces for up to one-half mile, maintain balance while the train is in motion, and work in confined spaces.
  • Adapt to temperature extremes and tolerate repetitive movements, squatting, bending, kneeling, overhead reaching, and prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Lift up to 35 pounds to shoulder height and horizontally transfer it up to 10 feet.
  • Ascend and descend platforms and an eight-step ladder while carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Pass required color and vision examinations and distinguish required auditory signals.
  • Work in a safety-sensitive environment and follow verbal commands and established safety procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Operate passenger rail equipment safely and efficiently in compliance with Federal and State regulations, NORAC Operating Rules, Amtrak Air Brake and Train Handling Rules, timetables, special instructions, safety rules, TASI/ACI instructions, and CTrail contractual instructions.
  • Operate equipment during varying work hours within a 24/7 transportation environment while maintaining alertness, situational awareness, and vigilance.
  • Report to the assigned train yard at the scheduled time and participate in job briefings with affected personnel.
  • Complete procedures to qualify the train consist before departing the initial terminal and at intermediate locations as required.
  • Perform switching assignments in cooperation with other departments.
  • Perform required inspections, tests, and procedures and complete required paperwork.
  • Identify and document equipment defects on the Daily Equipment Inspection Report.
  • Report mechanical malfunctions and coordinate with the Mechanical department to correct mechanical or safety problems.
  • Work as a crew member with fare-enforcement team members assigned to the equipment.
  • Receive and comply with en-route instructions from the Dispatch Center.
  • Report deficiencies and safety concerns on the rail corridor to the proper authority.
  • Prepare required reports.
  • Provide customer service and interface with passengers, CTDOT representatives, host railroad dispatchers, Mechanical personnel, managers, supervisors, and employees.
  • Wear the required uniform while performing duties.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Report safety violations to the immediate supervisor and comply with established safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
