Requirements
  • Be a current Maryland Institute College of Art undergraduate student.
  • Have previous job experience.
  • Be a Sculpture major or have completed Introduction to Sculpture and Metal Fabrication classes.
  • Have knowledge of sculpture studio tools.
  • Have practical knowledge of welding, fabrication, basic woodworking, and mold making.
  • Be able to draw in Rhino and help students troubleshoot their files and fix drawings.
  • Be able to assist with mold making, rubber mixing, plaster mixing, clay work, and proper personal protective equipment related to mold making.
  • Have knowledge of metal casting and ceramic shell techniques.
  • Have knowledge of personal protective equipment appropriate to techniques or machinery.
  • Have good mechanical sensibility.
  • Be able to collaborate with the studio community of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Have practical communication skills when answering questions and sharing relevant knowledge.
  • Have good organizational skills.
  • Have craftsmanship skills and an interest in incorporating cross-disciplinary methods in work.
  • Be sensitive to student needs.
  • Complete handbook orientation, anti-harassment, hazard communication, emergency plans and fire prevention, and personal protective equipment training.
  • Be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 45 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Assist students with machine setup and unlock equipment.
  • Support students with computer numerical control plasma cutting once trained.
  • Change consumable machine items such as blades and abrasives.
  • Report damaged or out-of-stock items to the Studio Manager.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist with maintaining and enforcing Environmental Health and Safety compliance by modeling safe studio practices and ensuring proper shop etiquette.
  • Provide support to the student community and monitor equipment use.
  • Enforce studio policies and demonstrate best practices when assisting students with equipment, materials, and techniques.
  • Assist other student technicians where necessary.
  • Lock all equipment at the end of a shift.
  • Shut off all fans and ventilation at the end of a shift.
  • Ensure ventilation is used correctly and when necessary.
  • Clean studios at the end of the night shift.
  • Communicate with the Studio Manager to help maintain tools and software and check personal protective equipment stock.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of metalworking experience.
  • At least 1 year of woodworking experience.
  • At least 1 year of mold-making experience.
  • Experience working as a technician elsewhere on campus.
  • Skills in Rhino 3D and Sheetcam CNC plasma cutting software.
  • Knowledge of various welding techniques.
  • A solid portfolio demonstrating skills and techniques relevant to this position.
