Responsibilities
  • Work with practice group leaders and partners in charge of staffing to manage the work allocation process for associates in the group.
  • Monitor associate workloads and professional development and help allocate new matters to ensure an equitable distribution of assignments consistent with clients’ needs and attorneys’ individual professional development goals.
  • Track, aggregate, and analyze associate metrics, including availability information and utilization rates, and partner with practice group leaders and associates to achieve individual productivity goals and maintain practice group productivity.
  • Coordinate with practice group leaders and supervising partners to identify staffing needs and hiring targets, and partner with the Legal Talent team to ensure hiring efforts support the group’s goals and needs.
  • Support the associate performance review process by working with practice group leaders and Associate Review Committee members to ensure quality reviews are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Monitor associate evaluations, prepare review delivery scripts, facilitate formal review delivery, and work with associates to implement feedback, collaborating with Professional Development team members to provide coaching where necessary.
  • Meet regularly with practice group leaders to identify high-performing associates and associates facing specific challenges so that appropriate mentoring, training, and other actions can be taken promptly, and facilitate frequent feedback between partners and associates.
  • Partner with Legal Talent and internal administrative departments to facilitate attorney onboarding and integration, including conducting department orientation for new hires and building onboarding schedules.
  • Conduct exit interviews so the firm can use departing associate feedback to improve the associate experience.
  • Collaborate with Professional Development and Legal Education team members to develop, enhance, and implement legal and professional skills training programs and initiatives supporting associate development.
  • Collaborate with Attorney Licensing and Compliance team members to ensure associates obtain and maintain licensing requirements and complete continuing legal education aligned with development goals.
  • Collaborate with the Diversity and Inclusion team to champion and implement initiatives and events, promote inclusive-culture best practices, and serve as a resource for diverse attorneys.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and Wellness teams to promote associate wellness.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctor degree.
  • Substantial experience in work allocation, talent management, career coaching, professional development, and/or personnel management.

Joining Cooley from Kirkland & Ellis, Black deepens Cooley's capabilities serving emerging and established sponsors in the middle markets. Commercial litigator heads to King & Spalding. King & Spalding has added disputes firepower in New York with the appointment of an 'outstanding' lawyer from Cooley. Trial lawyer Philip Bowman has bid farewell to Cooley after an eight-year tenure to join Cooley's New York-based business litigation practice as partner. The hire was confirmed today (3 September). With a focus on high-stakes commercial litigation, Bowman frequently represents clients in proceedings relating to life sciences collaboration and licensing, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), antitrust, trade secret and restrictive covenant issues, as well as litigation involving clients in the private equity, investment management, venture capital and technology sectors. Bowman acts before both state and federal courts across the US, as well as in domestic and international arbitrations. "Phil is an outstanding trial lawyer with a sophisticated commercial litigation practice that aligns closely with many of the firm's strategic priorities and enhances our ability to handle complex disputes across a range of industries," said Damien Marshall, co-leader of King & Spalding's Business Litigation practice group. Superluminal Medicines has closed an oversubscribed $60 million Series B financing led by BVF Partners, with participation from Deep Track Capital and Perceptive Advisors alongside existing investors including RA Capital Management, Insight Partners, and NVIDIA. The Boston-based biotechnology company will use the proceeds to advance its lead programme — a selective MC4R agonist for rare genetic forms of obesity and hypothalamic obesity — into a Phase 1 clinical trial by the end of 2026. The funding will also support expansion of its GPCR-focused discovery platform. Superluminal integrates AI, machine learning, and structural biology to develop small-molecule therapies targeting G protein-coupled receptors for endocrine and cardiometabolic diseases. Global law firm Sidley Austin has bolstered its life sciences transactions practice with the appointment of Jiqiang Lin as partner. The hire was confirmed yesterday (12 August). Lin joins the firm's New York office following a four-year stint at international law firm Cooley, where he was recently promoted to senior counsel in March 2026. With a client base including biotechnology, pharmaceutical and other life science companies, including China-based businesses, Lin specialises in complex intellectual property-focused commercial deals. His US and cross-border practice spans licensing arrangements, strategic collaborations and related transactions focused on the growth and commercialisation of innovative technologies and therapies. Lin's work also extends to advising on manufacturing and supply, research and development, distribution and commercialisation agreements, as well as commercial and intellectual property matters related to public offerings and mergers and acquisitions, as well as other strategic investments. In his earlier career, Lin served as an associate at global law firm Latham & Watkins and as a regulatory intern at biopharmaceutical giant Pfizer.
