Beam is a social enterprise and certified B Corp that uses crowdfunding to help disadvantaged people in the UK—such as those who are homeless or refugees—secure jobs, housing, and essential skills. It works by partnering with local authorities and charities to identify individuals in need and create personalized crowdfunding campaigns that the public can fund. Public donations cover costs like training, housing, and other services, with Beam earning revenue from service fees and partnerships with like-minded organizations. Since 2017, Beam has supported over 2,500 individuals. The company differs from others by combining a crowdfunding model with targeted social services and strong collaboration with public bodies, all aimed at delivering practical outcomes rather than just funding. Beam’s goal is to expand its impact, helping more people transition into stable work and housing while building sustainable funding through service fees and partnerships.

What believers are saying

  • Oxford City Council awarded Beam Casework Services on 27 May 2026.
  • Bedford Borough Council contracted Beam Up Ltd for software services from January 2026.
  • ECI Partners’ 2025 backing signals fresh capital and investor support for expansion.

What critics are saying

  • Sifted’s 2025 investigation found tiny referral-to-outcome conversion across multiple councils.
  • Conwy, Tower Hamlets, and Ashford ended or declined renewals after weak results.
  • If councils keep walking away, Beam’s public-impact marketplace loses its core demand.

What makes Beam unique

  • Beam’s caseworker-plus-crowdfunding model ties donors directly to housing and work outcomes.
  • Oxford City Council’s May 2026 contract buys Beam’s software-enabled homelessness support services.
  • Beam’s 2022 Ukrainian refugee expansion broadened its mission beyond UK homelessness.
